Draught Deep red brown, no head to speak of. Very subdued nose, hardly remarkable. Quite dry-roasted flavour, finish quite bitter-hoppy. Light, well-carbonated, refreshing. Passable to better in the style, certainly easy drinking.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 VsXsV (466) - Linköping, SWEDEN - APR 5, 2012
Bomber. Deep amber/red liquid with medium off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, grapefruity hops, toast, bread and cereal malt. Taste is dry, light to medium bitter with malty notes and some light hops. Medium bodied with nice carbonation. OK thirst quencher but a bit bry.
2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 omega (215) - NEW ZEALAND - MAR 22, 2012
Not the beer I was expecting. Pours a brick red colour and has a distinct caramel nose, so much so that if I tried this blindfolded I would think it was a lightish stout.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 mansquito (1818) - washington, Washington DC, USA - MAR 10, 2012
Wonderland Palace, DC 22oz ($6): Pours a red colour with an off-white head. Aroma veers toward the hoppy aspects. Cascade for sure. Taste is pretty hoppy with a malt backbone very present. This is pretty much an overhopped amber ale. Is it good? Sure. Is it great and/or memorable? No, not really.

On tap. Reddish brown with a small beige head. Aroma of caramel, biscuits and some pine. Flavor is sweet caramel malt with a firm hop bitterness. Medium body with average carbonation and a sticky mouth feel. Great amber, would be a bit sweet but the bitterness helps balance it out.

dark mahogany, almost a brown with red tint. Malty flavor with hops present but not overwhelming the entire way. Medium thickness, fresh profile
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 otakuden (1558) - Vero Beach, USA - JAN 23, 2012
Appearance: a slight haze covers rich mahogany and cherry wood hues under a tight, solid, and thick head of tan. Fades slowly, leaving lace and finally settling into a bubbly puddle of temptation. Swirls thick and lacy.
Nose: crunchy pine, apple, and caramel. Fir trees and ferns. Pink and yellow grapefruit freshly cut, squeezed, and ready for savorance. Scattered twigs in the back. Toffee crunch and spice. Plum skins and root beer candies.
Palate: sweet up front, not much of anything in the middle, and a bitter tannic dry finish of roasted chestnuts. Where oh where did the nose go? Spice in the breath mingles with plum and apple skins. As it warms up, some pink and yellow grapefruit poke through the middle with parching puckering rind and pith. Bitter sweet and sweetly bitter. Overall clean crisp and to the point procession of flavors. Pine and ferns skirt the edges. More plum and grapes skins make the sides of my cheeks tingle.
Final Thoughts: I was at first put off when transitioning from the nose to the palate, but as the Mermaids Red Ale warmed up just a bit, her palate opened. Dryer than implied, I nonetheless enjoyed her clean crisp presence. Red Ales in general can leave a lot to be desired or can be a surprising pleasure – this one was a pleasurable surprise and yes, I’d like another please.
