BBB63 (3767), La Porte, Indiana, USA May 1, 2008 Bottle and enjoyed in my GI IPA tulip: Pours a deep reddish brown hue with a huge fluffy head which left outstanding lace upon the glass. The aroma has a surprisingly fresh resiny and citric hop profile along with nice caramel and rye bread malt, hint of hazelnut, simple syrup, and a peaty earthy yeast vapour.
The taste pretty much matches the nose with a hop forward character balanced somewhat by sweet and sugary malts. A wicked nice hop spice and minerally finish with just a trace of alcohol. The mouth feel is sharp and aggressive with a chalky and metallic finish, again only a slight warming upon the chest as I drank it.
This is what American Strong Ales are all about, brash bold and hoppy. This is more hoppy than many IIPA out there but then has some nice balance too. I would have to say that this beer is vastly underrated. MIKEY LIKEY and even better than Yulesmith Winter IMO. jjpm74 (2878), Connecticut, USA Jan 30, 2008 Bottle courtesy of DarkElf. Pours dark red with a tan head. Smells of fresh noble hops, sage, some caramel. Nose is wonderful on this. Tastes of caramel, some earthy spice, fresh herbal qualities. Nice! sblair (37), SD, California, USA Aug 18, 2007 On tap Hamiltons. Deep rich auburn color. Malt. caramel and spice nose. Rich body and deceptively drinkable at 10%. A great Double Red ale jimbowood (715), Athens, Georgia, USA Dec 13, 2007 Bottle courtesy of Naven. Never tasted a brew that smelled like pure hop pellets. Purely awesome aroma. Flavor is a weird blend, but aroma makes up 4 it. sloth (1511), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA Mar 29, 2008 Large two tone tan head, excellent retention and gobulars of sticky, coating lace that lasts to the end. Clear, deep amber ruby hued body, an attractive brew for sure. Nose is nice, light pine and citrus, faint pencil shavings, fruit and malts. Body is full, chewy, coating on the palate with a well placed carbonation. Medium sweet malts up front, caramel, light nutty notes as well as some hidden roastiness. More citrusy hop flavors, oranges, spicey notes also, light pine showing. Finish is almost dry, fruity with a surprising hop bite to cap it all off. A neat American Strong. Props to SDbruboy for the bomber!
