Strong Ale 2012. Black in color with a khaki head. Nose starts off with some nice roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. However, it’s rather acidic and a hint ashy. The flavor is just okay. Nice roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. But, the same acidity and ash flavors detract from the beer and there’s a little bit of metal, too.

Bottled. Pours silky black with a fine ring of beige head that dissipated over the course of drinking. Interesting aroma of roasted malts with a touch of pine sap/ resin, citrus and anise. Maybe the amarillo showing through? Flavor is straightforward dark cacao, espresso and a bitter, dry finish. One of the hoppier IS’s ive tried. Overall very tasty but lacking balance, perhaps a touch of conflict of the peppery hops they were going for with the saucy roasted malt base.

Near onyx pour, more obsidian really, with a small latte head. Mocha, molasses, licorice, burnt coffee, cocoa, and vanilla in this one. ABV is nearly invisible. Lacks complexity but unique with the amount of dark malts evident. Rich.

Massively aromatic hop and deep roasted malts come through on the aroma. Jet black color with almost no foam at all. Enormous deep roasted malt complexity with a strong earthiness on the tail end. Most evident flavors include roasted coffee beans, molasses, brown sugar, strong hops and resin. Very smokey texture with a hint of booze on the finish. Overall, I am really impressed with this brew. Big roasted malts yet, still having a noticeable hop profile. I’d give this an A+ rating.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 skmikeg (429) - Poway, California, USA - NOV 28, 2012
Pours a pitch black with a small khaki head which fades to decent lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, black coffee, coco, molasses, some anise, and some dark fruits. Taste is of deeply roasted malts, black coffee, bakers coco, licorice/anise, molasses, burnt caramel, dark fruits, and maybe a little booze. Has a medium-full body with a creamy, oily mouthfeel and a semi bitter, ever so slightly alcoholic finish. overall, a pretty nice stout that has most of taste and aroma profiles that make a good RIS, but could maybe cover the 9.3 abv a little better.

Note: The spelling is Stupid on a bomber. Bomber from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Fred’s got the good stuff! Pours very dark brown/black with a slight, transient, tan head. The aroma is coffee and chocolate, but it’s a deeper, more intense, sort of aroma than is common. Full bodied. Very slick. Flavor is coffee, chocolate and treacle. Plus the usual burnt to crap malt which is very smooth. Comes to the finish with the foregoing and a lot of bitter. Amazing ale.

Bomber from BevMo. Pours pitch black. Roasty coffee nose with a little bit of milky sweetness. Flavor is fairly roasted up front with some good coffee notes. A little subdued sweetness. Finish has a little bit of a hoppy bite to it. Alcohol is well hidden.

On tap @ the brewpub on Coronado Island. Listed as 10% ABV, and designated "Stupid Stout" (i.e. proper spelling), so maybe this was a different beer, I don’t know. Near black with only the thinnest light brown film on the surface. Aroma is roast, sweet molasses, and something herbal. Roasty palate, but with heavy sweet herbal accents, something between sasparilla and juniper. Quite odd, but compelling and tasty.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheGrandMaster (2335) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - SEP 15, 2012
Draught at Galbraith’s Alehouse (Auckland, NZ). There was so much going on with this beer it was confronting, confusing, but also delicious. A lot of beer...requiring a lot of attention.
