This deep, dark, viscous brew stands up to other imperial stouts, delivering big flavors in a smooth, balanced and easy-drinking package. Robust and chocolaty with a hint of hop freshness, it’s the perfect beer to warm up with as winter cold sets in.

Tap paddle at St Augustine?s in Vancouver. A black beer with a tan head. There are chocolate and coffee notes here but they are subdued. Overrated. 3.3.

Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black (almost opaque). Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (roasted/burnt grain), with notes of leather, cement, alcohol. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Rather phenolic nose, and not a lot going on there in general...the phenols kind of kill any malt attraction that might be underneath. Generic in the mouth as well...more like a stronger ordinary stout than what we think of as imperial stout. Disappointing.

On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out a good mix of roasted malts, oats and a little cocoa. Flavour is rich and robust, with tons of roasted malt, oats and chocolate in decent harmony. This is anything but tame and one-dimensional, but it is also lacking a bit in drinkability with some abrasiveness. All in all, a fairly enjoyable slow sipper of an impie.

Black pour with a beige to tan head .... Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts and coffee .... Taste is of chocolate, roasted malts, light smoke, and bitter hoppy dry .... Mouthfeel is a little oily .... Finish is lingering with a bitter roasted and smokey ... Definitely robust

Tap@Beer Ditch, Malmö - pours black with tan head. Roasted and sweet malty aroma and taste, with big chocolate prominence, ashy charred burnt malty notes, coffee beans, decent hoppy backing, roasted finish.

Put this in some barrels. Much bigger body and viscous mouthfeel. Semi sweet. A little vanilla. Some chocolate malt on the finish. Smooth chocolate aromas. Much better base beer than the event horizon i just had.

A nice stout! Pours a deep black with a tan head. Smells of vanilla, peanuts, chocolate and coffee. Taste is very creamy and sweet, with vanilla and peanuts, and some coffee and chocolate in the finish. Had on tap at the Brewseum.

Tap at Marciero. Black with lace. Rich cocoa nose, light berries and coffee. A bit tart, but mainly quite sweet, lots of chocolate and cocoa and some berries and coffee. Nice.

650ml bottle from Ray’s in Tosa. Almost black pour with a brown head. Aroma has roasty malts, chocolate and caramel. Taste follows with a smokiness added as well. The blend is solid and the body is medium-to-full. Less carbonated than expected, with a bit of an alcohol presence. Finishes sweetly roasty. Was really excited to try this one after the barrel version, but this is not in the same league. Solid. 14.3
