3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: DEC 8, 2003 I am not sure if it is fair to rate this, because I had it on tap, and it must have gone bad, or they mixed it with water or something. There was little to no beer taste. Didnt finish it. It was like watered down French herbal liqueur(the name escapes me right now) way too much black licorice and no body trying to compensate for the high alcohol content Horribly disappointing. This was the 2002. I will have to try this again elsewhere and hopefully it will just turn out as a case of a bad barrel. RERATE. Ok, bought a bottle of the exact vintage I sampled in rating above (2002). Wow, much better. Rather watery for a belgian strong, I still must say, but not obviously a good bottle. Spicy, cinnamon, caramel, clove, some nice oak-like alcohol flavors. Low carbonation after it breathes a bit. Somewhat tart and acidic throughout.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
All 3 bottles I had of this holiday beer were outstanding. Complex on the nose and palate with hint of figs, caramel, semi-sweet chocolate, nutmeg. Spices are noticeable but do not dominate, great balance of sweet and tart, the alcohol actually helps clean the palate leaving a smooth aftertaste. Can't wait to try next years offering. A fan of all Corsendonk beers.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aroma is fruity, malty, dry spiced with clean minty notes. Sweet, light fruits and herbs at the front of the palate, dries and gains in subsatnce mid-way with a figgish like dryness. Alcohol forces its way through in the latter half.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Thanks to Darkover for the trade. 'Tisn't really the season but this beer would hit the spot no matter what time of year. Pours a dark reddish-brown color with a medium thick creamy beige head. Very little lacing. Aroma is well-spiced. Nice rich texture, with flavors of caramel, malt, alcohol, spices (pepper) and a little fruit. The finish is warm and earthy and just a little bitter. Overall this is a well-balanced yet complex seasonal that I will look for over the holidays.

UPDATED: SEP 9, 2004 Dark brown/amber with a small beige head. Heavy lacing. Aroma is sweet, spicy, caramel and pretty strong. Flavor is very spicy, peppery(black) and malt. The flavor is even better after 6-9 months in the celler.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
This is a pretty good beer. It pours very dark and murky brown with a hint of red and a small head and little lacing on the glass. Much unlike the other Corsendonks that I've had in the past - better actually. The aroma was fairly spicy, but my terrible nose couldn't detect any of the scents very well (but they were there). The taste was very good. The alcohol was apparent, but barely and in a good way. There were some fruits and spices in the taste as well. I can't see gulping this beer, but as I drink it right now, the sips are heavenly. I recommend trying this beer.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cloudy dark reddish brown beer with a full tan head. Taste of toasted malt, banana, caramel, and winter spice. Dry tannic mouthfeel, sort of like spruce boughs had been used. Really enjoyable winter brew. Curious to see what it tastes like after aging for a year.

(Bottle) Cloudy brown body with a medium, cream head. Roasted malt aroma with slight spice. Taste of sweet roasted malt and some spice undertones. Finishes with a malty bitterness. Nice.
