2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Dark browish appearance with good head that disappears slightly. It had a slight toast smell but, not much to speak of. Taste was malty with that toasted/roasted smell sneaking back in. The finish was slightly bitter but, mostly malty.

Umber in color. Very slightly grey, initially thick head that diminishes to a lasting one eighth inch. I noticed some rather large and gross-looking brown chunks even on the first pour even though it definitely wasn't spoiled. Vaguely spicy nose is vinous with a note of chocolaty malt. Low carbonation, quite smooth but a bit watery. Loaded with dark malt flavor--raisin molasses. Lots of spicy esters with a hint of alcohol and bitterness in the finish. A top notch Belgian despite a few flaws.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark brown and murky look with a small frothy head which quickly disappears. A weak aroma of toasted marshmallows leads to the slightly bitter flavor profile. The aroma promised more than the flavor delivered. Somewhat over rated in my opinion, but not a bad beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: FEB 18, 2006 Dark brown and hazy, with no head retnetion. Nose of caramelized candy sugar, porto, and alcool. Nice wonderful taste of sugars at first followed by torrefied malts in second, with a peak of alcool warmth and finishing with smooth hops in the end. Vanilla comes out near the end. Rich body which also varies in time, keeping the beer interesting. 8-4-8-5-16

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Deep amber/brown body, thin head, and a thin lace on the glass. Fruity aroma with apples and cherries, with a spicy touch (cinnamon). Sublime sweetness deliciously balanced by a slight acidity. Warm but not too earthy, sugary yet surprisingly fresh, with a long tarty finish. Medium to full body. A classy and refined ale.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Spiced apples with mild hops. Very alive. Very subtle cinnamon and floral tastes as well. Good, but didn't really wow me.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a clear ruby topped by a large rocky tan head. The aroma is sweet and spicy with loads of citrus and caramel. A very nice heady aroma. The flavor is sweet caramel, oranges, and a tiny bit of bitterness. The body is medium with lively carbonation. The finish is protracted with some smokiness coming in at the end. A nice belgian.

3.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Smells just like Christmas, with fresh baked pie and spice cake. Felt a bit thin and watery in the mouth, and the flavor didn't live up to the wonderful aroma.

Beautiful dark Belgian ale with . Definately a winter ale - 8.5% leans towards a barley wine taste, but more of an ale - not as sweet, and prominent malty taste. Now I taste a spice flavor or some type - clove maybe, and slightly smoky flavor too. Excellent. Goes down smooth.
