3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
I had the 2002 vintage and was greatly looking forward to the experience. It was indeed an excellent beer but not quite spectacular. I was slightly disappointed in the finish, which seemed faintly metallic (almost like blood). There are a lot of complex flavors in this beer; it's rewarding to savor and identify them.

2002 bottling. Interesting malty, fruity and spicy aroma, some dark breadiness and cocoa, with touches of herbal hop, coriander, mint, toffee, and perhaps some faint tangerine. Dark reddish brown color, slightly hazy, with an off-white, settling head. Malty and fruity to start, traits of plum and blood orange, turning sweet and spicy with notes of caramel sweetness, milk chocolate and baking spices, and seeing some peppery alcohol, bitterness and tart citrus added to the mix just in time for the finish. Gently warming, moderate amount of acidity, effervescent on the palate and medium-full bodied. Unique and intriguing flavor development. I had been looking forward to trying this beer for quite some time, a couple of years at least, and was not disappointed. Thanks, Jordan.

Beautiful deep amber color with an off-white head. Sweet caramel and peppery spices in the aroma. Strong malty peppery flavor, with a hint of smokiness and dark fruit. Pretty strong carbonation. Warm alcohol aftertaste.

750 ml. brown bottle, corked, with a strange looking banded cage on it. 2003 batch. Lot number 131484. $9.99 at Rip's. Poured out a deep, dark amber color, with a huge cappuccino colored head. It fades slowly back to yeasty islands floating on top of the beer.
Aromas are of slight smoky malts, brandied fruits, nutmeg, cinnamon, bready yeast, rum soaked plums, and definitely alcohol.
Tastes of smoky malt, spices, and dried, dark mascerated fruits.
Aromatic alcohols fill the nose along with the spices, and blend into a fruitcake in a glass. Rich mouthfeel, sharp tingly finish to it as well. No hops aromas, but a slight hops zing at the end, before it is swallowed. A really good Christmas beer. Would go really well with a rich Christmas feast, like a smoked goose, or a honey baked ham. One of the best seasonals I've ever had, bar none.
