3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tasted at local shop’s weekly beer tasting, so this is based solely on a 1oz taste. Will re-rank later when I have the full bottle. Somewhat smoky and spicy on the nose, tastes a little spicy, malty, and a bit of citrus.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle thanks to Eugene and after-Christmas sales. Paired with cookies and Deadwood. Deep deep dark brown pour, nearly opaque, with big creamy head that flourishes but dissipates soon enough, leaving behind lacing. I should let this warm up, but I’m impatient. Aroma is plum, fruit cake, toffee. I pass it to Summer and she hits on it right away: "reminds me of Dr Pepper." Yep -- with all the fruit cake there’s plenty of cola, vanilla, and secret Dr Pepper spicing. Moderate+ sweetness, medium body, slick texture. Overall: fancy Dr Pepper for grown-ups (which I mean in the best possible way). Edited to add: oh yeah, don’t forget the tootsie roll. Tootsie roll Dr Pepper beer.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Good looking pour is clear, dark brown with lasting beige pillow on top. Aroma has some spices I’m not too fond of - anise and clove. I can smell the Belgian yeast and malt I enjoy beneath, but the spice is detracting. Flavor is better, with the spices more subdued, some ripened fruits and sweet malt. Slightly thin, but smooth mouthfeel. Not sure I’ll revisit this one.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
DATE TASTED: December 28, 2015... GLASSWARE: Corsendonk tulip...OCCASION: enjoying each day of the Christmas break with a review... APPEARANCE: pours a dark, lustrous purple brown body; immense, three-finger brown head forms creamy, bubbly cork that retains its dignity for quite some time; when it acquiesces, what is left is equally majestic--a flurry of Brussels lace ... AROMA: plum and raisin, doughy, toasted malts and earthy hops mingle with less dominant citrus to provide a welcoming, complex aroma... PALATE: strong, commanding yet smooth sip; maltiness is apparent in its fortitude at the finish, while the early palate suggests some hop activity; lively during its middle passage, while dry at the end--full-bodied, thick, and not at all bitter... TASTE: first, the toasted sweetness of bread and chocolate converge; just as quickly, orange and licorice arrive to create a nuanced holiday flavor; malts are doughy, slightly smoky and formidable; plum and pear make the fruitiness even more apparent--quite a cocktail, but one that holds to its original mission of drinkability...OVERALL: I purchased this months ago in preparation for this season--yet so far from its end date of January 2017--and this old friend does not disappoint. Up to 8.5% ABV as per its label, this cream, full-bodied beer relentlessly pleases sip after sip, a perfect comrade for the freezing rain falling outside...not much to find fault with here--a great drinking experience...
