kepano (239), Meudon, France Nov 9, 2005 Pours a wonderful murky dark brown with red-orange highlights. A huge mountainous head rises majestically in my Trappist glass and leaves thick uneven lacing as it diminishes. The aroma is sweet and enticing, with notes of apple, banana, vanilla, cinnamon and warming red grapes. The flavor is slightly sharp but smoothens with the appearance of smoked malts. I had a fabulous goat cheese to go with it and the combination was simply delicious. Red wine is noticeable in the flavor while apple reappears briefly. Sadly the brew leaves little aftertaste to work on between sips. A delightful beer aside from that fact!
TreborWhip (68), Reading, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 7, 2009 Bottle at Union Jack’s poured into a Corsendonk Trappist glass (which I bought for $3.00) produced a dark brown body and medium light brown head that was creamy and long lasting. Taste was dominated with spices and dark fruits. The complexity of flavors and aroma increased as the ale warmed. Another very enjoyable Belgium ale. sound67 (160), Offenbach, Germany Oct 21, 2009 On tap at "Le Belge" in Offenbach, from a Corsendonk chalice. It’s actually "Paternoster", you know. ;=)
Reddish dark brown colour; medium, creamy beige head with some lacing.
Intense aroma of licorice and orange peel. Medium to low carbonation, medium body, slightly grainy mouthfeel despite the alcohol.
Taste is not too sweet, fortunately (something I detest in some Belgian ales), herbal spices and aniseed dominate. Rather bitter at first, then getting slightly sweeter towards the finish, but then dry again. Interesting! Mildly alcoholic after taste - otherwise, the alc seems well integrated, the beer on the whole well-balanced and compelling, if not terribly complex.
Very good, highly sessionable(!) Belgian dubbel. planky84 (100), , Greater London, England Oct 19, 2009 Bottle from Mr Lawrence Wine Merchants, Brockley. Pours a dark brown with an impressive biege head. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruits. interesting flavours. Licorice, raspberries, dark chocolate, brown sugar. Finishes sweet with malt and hop notes. Fevernova (33), Ohio, USA Oct 16, 2009 750mL Bottle -- At first I was unimpressed with this brew, but as time went on and the temperature in my glass rose so did my satisfaction. I still think it is a little thin on the palate but the flavors and complexity are there. Niko100 (82), New York, USA Oct 9, 2009 Very dark brown color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of malt, some fruit, and coffee overtones; Flavor mainly of roasted malt, caramel, and even chocolate; Balanced with a nice finish; For me, one of the better Belgium brews - really good. TEJA (281), Stockholm, Sweden Oct 9, 2009 A litle over aged bottle but still marvelous. Nice sweet chrystal malt aroma that is also present in the taste with a lively fizz. Wery nice color and a fine but short foam. soapbox (15), Alabama, USA Oct 8, 2009 Pours a nice brown color with a huge foam head. After the foam subsides the beer presents itself as a nice brown ale. Has a nice feel/body to it and a malty and nutty flavor. It just isn’t worth the price though. caresville (106), Vernon, New Jersey, USA Oct 5, 2009 pours a deep brown with an off white head, smells terribly like stale bread to me every time i drink this but its what it tastes like that really matters. this stuff is up there with the best of the best in taste in belgium. a wonderful mixture of plums and pears that hit you at the same time as chocolate and belgian baked bread, while you get a strong malty presence. ends dry but full of flavor, leaves you always wanting more.
