4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 William (202) - Utrecht, NETHERLANDS - APR 17, 2002
Very strong malty aroma.
Head disappeared quite quickly. Taste of raisins, malt. Nice round mouthfeel.
4.1 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 aracauna (2855) - Georgia, USA - APR 6, 2002
Large foamy head, light tan. It’s a nice deep ruby brown color. It’s a very aromatic beer. I could smell the floral fruitiness if it before I even got near the glass. There may be some caramel to the flavor and some sharp citrus aspects. Some sweetness, as well. A little disapointing because of its lack of complexity. Good beer, ok Belgian.

I can see this being a pleaser for you mud-lovers out there but even with a respect for Belgian beers I was not impressed. A pretty lame overall flavor. I had to really work to finish the glass.

Okay, I’m rating this from draft, not from bottles. It’s quite good, with good flavor and, like it’s paler cousin, very pleasant to drink with excellent fruity tones. From the bottle it’s far too sweet and not nearly as enjoyable.

Yummy.. complex beyond belief.. goes down like water despite it’s hefty alcohol content..

UPDATED: NOV 16, 2005 Had this beer for the first time in The Burp castle in the Village in Manhattan. Wonderfully tasting beer with the alcohol content to go with it. It’s a relaxing drink, very hoppy and a bit sweet. But one of my favorites, price withstanding.
One of my all time favorites. A must for any beer lover.
This is what I wrote before they changed the recipe. This beer used to be the best. It’s a shadow of it’s former self now. Some monk got his palm greased and went off into a corner?!?
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Ernest (5610) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAR 25, 2002
UPDATED: OCT 22, 2005 750ml bottle. Head is initially large sized, frothy/fizzy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is medium brown, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, roasted nuts), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with light notes of raisin and brown sugar. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic. Finish is moderately sweet, liglhtly acidic, lightly bitter. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. An overly sweet, somewhat sticky rendition that doesn’t smell or taste too much like a dubbel. I seem to remember this having more character years ago, but maybe I’ve just found better things since. Very simple.

Smells of fruit and nuts. Russet colour. Like drinking a raison and peanut chocolate bar. Lucious.

Better than their pale. Port and raisins, I agree with the Commercial Description.
