trokini (1027), San Diego, California, USA Jan 23, 2009 Pours copper-brown with a fluffy off-white head. Not a lot of lacing. Malty, caramel aroma. Heavy phenol/medicinal scents with nutmeg and earthy bread. Mouthfeel is lighter than expected; the carbonation makes this much easier to drink than other, syrupy dubbels. Mostly dark dried fruits blended with candy and brown sugar in the taste. Again, the alcohol, while not very high, is noticeable. Sweet without cloying. Not what I expected, but a good beer, nonetheless. aaaaaaaaaah (61), Warren, Michigan, USA Jan 22, 2009 Average size, fizzy head, strong carbonation similar to pop. Weak aroma, smelled slightly like Belgium yeast.. Not much head retention, dark red body. Taste slightly roasted sweet like raisins or prunes malt. 2 stage beer, creamy sweet to mild coffee bitter. Mild creamy body with soft carbonation and a mild finish. Poured 12oz into glass. Good beer. Wynne (22), , Pennsylvania, USA Jan 22, 2009 Updated: Apr 25, 2009Tried it warmish, but personally preferred it quite cold. Very thick head that you can feel all the way through the drinking process. Better than nearly all the Belgian browns I’ve tried except for Kasteel and the Corsendonk Christmas Ale. Aroma is weak. Medium dark brown color. Raisin, coriander, cloves, yeast, nuts. I agree with the cinnamon and fig. Finished a bit more sour than it started, but the rich, creamy, foamy palate never wavered. Very nice, although, the Christmas Ale is still their best in my assessment. I’ll have to try the Tripel as well. machfive55 (218), Columbia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 20, 2009 Poured a nice deep brown with a foamy tan head, that lasted long into the beer. The aroma was malty with some fruity notes. The flavor was complex, chocolate, fruity, nutty with roasty notes. Some hops come through a little as the beer warms then fade away quickly. A well brewed, clean and tasty brown ale. Nice. stangger (155), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 9, 2009 11.Xoz bottle. Light brown... weak aroma. A bit yeasty, somewhat malty with standard Belgian taste mixed with a little bit of mild hoppiness. pjweaver (133), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 4, 2009 3qt 5oz bottle Best by 2002. Poured in late 2007. Trappist glass.
Not necessarily an aging beer, it was falling apart when we finally celebrated graduation of a roommate with this old dusty bottle.
Slightly fermenty sour aroma with smoke and some red fruit. Slight sour with raisins and chocolate, mellow compared to a newer bottle. Foamy smooth palate. Little to no head on the beer, with large quantities of protein aggregates...which one would expect.
Overall, gains some character after a few years.....use a coffee filter if aggregates aren’t your style, I did not mind them in the least. VitaminR (421), Colorado, USA Dec 31, 2008 Dusty caramelized figs with a sight cinnamon notes. Dark brown color with hints f orange, medium frothy head with nice lacing. Malty spicy sweet with bitter orange peel, some tart notes, a little clove in there. Highly carbonated, medium body, smooth molasses finish with some alcohol warmth. Solid beer. Rustyham (545), miami, Florida, USA Dec 30, 2008 Updated: Mar 14, 2009Fantastic Beer that started out no better than Sam Adams American Ale, but then I realized that the flavor improved as it warmed. Drink this only slightly chilled, and not with sushi. It has a little of the Orval alcohol sting to it that I did not find too pleasing.
