Commercial Description:
Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Editor's note: Apparently production has moved from Van Steenberge to du Bocq as of Sept 2007.

Bottle 33cl. Poursa a clear copporbrown colour with a good size head and normal carbonation. Very fruity smell to it, has also got some nuts there and sweetness. Taste is good balance between dried fruits and bitterness, has a very nice palate also.

Bottle, best before date shows 06/09/04 (??!!). Bought in a liquor shop at Urk. Chocolate brown colour, lots of carbonization, big, thick creamy coloured head. Aromas of chocolate, pepper and spices, something coffeeish, figs and cassis. Soft taste, cassis-like, with berrries. a bit acidic also. Finish not great, quickly fading. Because of the strange best before date I will taste this once again sometimes

Bottle at Staminee de Garre in Brugge, Belgium. Awesome clear dark brown appearance with a thick, creamy off-white head. Aroma is malt, dark fruits, yeast, and mild smoke. Flavor is great with caramel malt, roast, dark fruits, vinous notes, raisins, and chocolate. Medium-full body, slightly creamy on the palate.

Bottled. Poured clear coppery brown with a creamy cap of beige head. The aroma picked up rich dark fruits, toasted figs, and a pinch of chocolate with dry, fresh yeast laced throughout.. a touch phenolic on the edges, but otherwise well presented. The flavor had currants, dark fruit, and berries on a bed of caramel at the core.. peppery yeast was laced throughout, and alcohol was more and more apparent as it warmed up.. spicy finish with more dark fruit. Medium-plus bodied with heavy, filling carbonation on the palate.. balance was OK. Solid brew overall.

Pours a clear copper-amber body and a beige head that laces. Smells of candied nuts, yeast, and fruit. Flavor is dried fruit, vanilla, yeast, and some citrus. Finish lingers some. Little oily and sweet.

Pours brown, nice beige head, good lace. Nose of malt, nuts, yeast, fruit. Taste is yeast, caramel, malt, roasted nuts, slightly bitter finish. Overall a very good brew that I enjoy every time I have it, the perfect balance of roasted, malty, fruity goodness.

Bottle sampled at the Belgian tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 7/16/09. Cloudy brown pour with a big tan head. Malty aroma with lots of caramel and some Belgian yeast. Yeasty flavor up front giving way to caramel malt and a bitter thin finish.

Solid dark brown color with a beautiful slightly off white head. Nice lacing as well. Unfortunately I think this was the highlight of what was otherwise just a very good beer. Not quite outstanding in my eyes. The aromas were very good. Plenty of roasty malts, caramel, candied nuts, plums, and other fruits on the nose. Yeast also. Especially up front. The flavors just weren’t quite there for me. Raisin and malt. I think I’m being overly hard on this beer. Still very good just not quite great in my eyes.
