CheersMate1 (763), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Apr 21, 2007 This beer was very rich I thought. Which is a good characteristic of the beer. The beer was kind of salty to me, but there was a sweet fruity flavor to balance it out. One of the greatest flavors to me is the combination of sweet and salty. The beer had the smell of dark fruits. I would say raisins would be the closest fruit to compare it to. The beer was dark brown and had a nice caramel smell and flavor to it. ABV is okay, I always wish it were a bit higher. Decent brew. tennisjoel (931), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Apr 21, 2007 Dark red pour with a thin white head. Deep caramel notes with grape and plum nose as well. Highly carbonated but not overly so as to detract from the beer. Personally finished tied for third out of the 9 dubbels sampled at a blind tasting. For the group it finished second. DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Apr 17, 2007 12 oz. bottle. Dark ruby brown pour producing a very durable large light brown head and excellent lace. Roasted character to the aroma is supplemented by some yeasty and earthy notes as well as some faint dark fruit. Palate is mildly astringent and dry with a medium body and carbonation. Sweet, burnt caramel flavor is held nicely in check by a spicy bitterness. This is not as fruity as some of the dubbles that I’ve had. It leans toward a drier, more bitter finish, which isn’t all bad as far as I’m concerned. islay (467), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Apr 16, 2007 Sampled at a blind abbey dubbel tasting hosted by tennisjoel on 4-14-07, along with eight other beers. This was the fourth beer that we tasted. It finished in second place in my rankings, and it was second place in the group rankings. Originally poured from a 750 mL bottle. The overwhelming winner of the night was ’t Smisje Dubbel, with Corsendonk Pater finishing a strong if distant second.
<P>Wheat-like, smoky aroma featuring sweet tobacco and fresh lemon juice scents. Almost reminiscent of a rauch-weizen, although the smoke smell is much weaker here than in an actual rauchbier. Very strong, very good aroma. Pours a remarkably dark amber with a red hue and a very small amount of beige head. Sharp wheat and smoke-like tastes. Tastes like it smells, but I think those elements work better in the aroma than in the flavor. Dry finish. Sour and bitter aftertaste. Medium body. Very lively on the tongue. High in carbonation. When I tried this beer, I figured that it would win the tasting handily. Little did I suspect the awesomeness that is ’t Smisje Dubbel remained on the horizon... jlf278 (250), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Apr 15, 2007 750ml, very nice presentation with cork. Beautiful looking with a nice nutty smell. However, a little dry and bitter. Not very tasty, but a mildly enjoyable brew nonetheless. DonkeyHoetay (20), Bellerose, New York, USA Apr 13, 2007 750ml Bottle, dark brown , tan head. mild flavor , tastes somewhat dry almost like a wine. as belgians go an..... OK beer. better than a lager but for the price there way better alternatives ilovedarkbeer (1322), Dallas, Texas, USA Apr 9, 2007 Somewhat weak in flavor. Tastes of apples almost to the point of being apple juice like. Low alcohol mouthfeel with a lasting warming finish. Pretty good but I expect more from a trappist beer. cab (861), Denmark Apr 6, 2007 Draft. good head, belgium yeast, and sent, alot of co2, fruity, and good. Dark in color.
