Commercial Description:
Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Editor's note: Apparently production has moved from Van Steenberge to du Bocq as of Sept 2007.

Bottle sampled at the Belgian tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 7/16/09. Cloudy brown pour with a big tan head. Malty aroma with lots of caramel and some Belgian yeast. Yeasty flavor up front giving way to caramel malt and a bitter thin finish.

Solid dark brown color with a beautiful slightly off white head. Nice lacing as well. Unfortunately I think this was the highlight of what was otherwise just a very good beer. Not quite outstanding in my eyes. The aromas were very good. Plenty of roasty malts, caramel, candied nuts, plums, and other fruits on the nose. Yeast also. Especially up front. The flavors just weren’t quite there for me. Raisin and malt. I think I’m being overly hard on this beer. Still very good just not quite great in my eyes.

(Sample Date: 7/11/2009 Source:Other) Clear deep mahogany brown with a huge rocky off white head that collapses quickly. Caramel and roast aroma with slightly sour hints and light spicy phenolics. High carbonation, medium body and fizzy mouth feel. Flavor is caramel, dark sugars, and dark fruits with hint of roastiness and chocolate and a very slight sour twang. Finish is medium and lightly spicy with just a touch of residual bitterness. Yummy.

Well I thought the commercial description was right on. Very complex beer with a distinctive taste and very drinkable. Smooth and tasteful, definitely will drink this brew again.

Smells rich and malty. Looks quite dark, not quite a black pilsner, you can still see the light through it. A strong malty taste that doesn’t ovrepower and lots of carbonation make it feel good and taste good.

Okay here is they deal if there was a belgium beer that I thought would change the minds of non beer drinkers this would be it. plumes and sugar on the nose. Pours heavenly brown with a nice white head. This beer as a fantastic mouthfeel medium body that is so crisp and smooth I thought I was drinking silk. Flavor was brown Utopia in a bottle. Chocolate. plum raisin and sugar made this brew an incredible experience.

Pours nearly solid brown, I can tell this bottle is a few years old from the gigantic yeast blobs that pour into it. The head on this beer is beige and very large. Aroma is obviously Belgian yeast along with honey and ripe fruit. Taste is mellow yeast and roast malt. Very smooth texture but once again I think it has mellowed a bit. After reading "slightly smoky" I can pick up on it, but before it just seemed like toasted bread.
