Commercial Description:
Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Editor's note: Apparently production has moved from Van Steenberge to du Bocq as of Sept 2007.

Bottle. Pours brown with a medium light brown head. Aroma of dark fruits, raisins, nice and sweet. Taste is a little more chocolate and slightly smokey, fruit is still there. A little bit dry in the finish. Medium body.

12 oz. bottle. Poured into a Leffe abbey stem glass. Aromas of plums and chocolates. This tastes a little more sour than sweet. Has a raisin like fruity flavor. Mouthfeel is lighter than expected. Airy carbonation and powdered hot cocoa mix with a smokey risidue. Comes across to me as a "poor man’s" Dubbel compared to their outstanding Tripel. Certainley drinkable but hardly meet my expectations.

25 oz bottle, Stateline Liquors. Got this because I called in a phone order to be picked up by someone else and gave the wrong number, oh well. Pours a mostly clear brown colored body under a very fizzy beige head that had very long retention due to the vigerous carbonation. Aroma is fairly simple, lightly fruity with a slight sourness and a good amount of yeast. A hint of chocolate malt also. Flavor is quite fruity as well with some raisons and plums. Some yeast and light alcohol on the finish with that light lactic sourness that is the downfall of this beer. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with alot of fizzy prickly carbonation. Finish is a little sticky. Overall, a beer I’m not particularly fond of these days. I don’t care for that light acidic/lactic finish.

Huge offwhite coarse head. Dark red body that’s kind of opaque, possibly because it’s hazy. Harmonic vinuous licorice aroma with spicy, yeasty notes. Deep, harmonic, bitter licorice taste with chocolate notes and a touch of bread. Dry, almost floral aftertaste. Relatively straightforward and a bit watery. Good, and drinkable, but nothing major. (0.75l bottle.)

Bottle; Had a mediun sweet and chocolate malt aroma. Black body with tan head and some lacing. Flavor had a good chocolate dry malt with some added sweetness and moderate bitterness. Left dry coco mix and cigar aftertaste on palate. Good Brew.

From C&C 750. Pours a dark brown with orange tints. Nose of yeats and dark fruits and brown sugar with an herbal earthiness. Very smooth palate that brings forth most of the nose, with a smooth bitterness at the end. Very good.

Bottled(330ml). -Deep brown coloured, medium sized tan head, fizzy. Nice spicy nose. Aroma is malty and spicy with caramel, chocolate and honey notes. Spicy, subdued yeasty and slight sweet finish. To be honest I was expecting much better beer.

One of the most drinkable Belgian ales I’ve tried. By that I mean this is not a beer to be sip and ruminate over, it’s not that complex. Just a solid, dark brew. Something I’d want to drink every day.
