Commercial Description:
Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Editor's note: Apparently production has moved from Van Steenberge to du Bocq as of Sept 2007.

Pours a dark brown with a thick white head. Aroma of vanilla and malt and a bit of yeast, very faint. Light sweet flavor of malt and fruit. A bit too light for this kind of beer. Alcohol is definitely present, more than expected. Balanced finish.

From the bottle, it’s own glass (as pictured) at my favourite haunt in Brugges, Belgium - the Dolle Dries.
Poured a muddy, gritty brown (unlike ’as pictured’). Head couldn’t wait to say hello and erupted forth spewimg out all over the table. Iit was definitely excited to see the light and managed such a wickedly firm, two layered, continuously reproduced, pad of tannish foam that did lace well. Warming, mellowing and deeply earthy, peaty, generously fruity and malty aroma wafted endlessly from the glass. It also showed traces of smoke, cinnamon and cloves, also some of that alcohol as far as spice. The aroma was one of enticement and allurement but hey, it’s got to be palatable. In the mouth it’s vinous, short of being ’big’ and the carbonation, which holds out, is sadly fizzy and annoying. It yields some rich malts and a strong serving of pale fruitcake-like flavours that give it just a little depth. Firmly, thickly malty in the back the bitter fruits grasp just shortly before a generally dry, ’hot’, warming, spicy and fruity, vinous swallow. Nice depth and length, but it just doesn’t accomplish much. I liked parts, I disliked parts. Another beer, down a few €, but it was worth it!!!

Nice dark brown pour with light sweet aroma. Light smooth taste with hints of raisin, cherry, apple, and a bit of brown sugar. Finishes nicely with just a bit of tingly bitterness.

(06.17.06) One pint, 94.4 oz brown bottle from Whole Foods, Deerfield, IL. 7.5% ABV. Best enjoyed before 8/25/06. Dark hazy amber with large off-white head. Soft carbonation. Sweet malt and vanilla aroma. Belgium dubbel that starts semi-dry with light malt sweetness and fruity/ spicy/hop flavors. Some metallicflavor notes. Slight sharpness (carbonation?) in the mouth. Finsihed dry with light hop bitterness. A good dry Belgium ale with a notable bitter endge. . No sour notes detected.

Black cherry red with dirty vanilla foam. Heavily sedimented, but an insubstantial body for a Dubbel of this strength. Fruity licorice aroma. Dark fruit with a bitter chocolate finish. Rapidly losing my ability to taste (hayfever). Will get back to you on this one.
