fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Jun 16, 2006 750 ml bottle. Pours deep brown with a huge fluffy light tan head. Aromas are fruity with dried and dark fruits. Some caramel in there too. Flavors are still malty and dark, but with a hoppy bitterness that was quite a suprise. Pretty darn tasty. mj (4971), Colorado, USA Jun 14, 2006 Updated: Aug 8, 200733cl bottle Nose of toasted cinnamon bread, caramel and brown sugar. Spicy and toasty nose. Palate is oily and slick, texture shows high carbonation and is mostly fizzy. Has a stale old bottle flavor, along with a cinnamon and toast malt flavor. sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jun 11, 2006 750ml corked bottle. Unfiltered and murky brown. Clinging white head. Cocoa and berry nose. Musty, barnyard head. Woody and lively. Pruny. Chocolate malt note. Fruity esters. Tingling. Chalky. Toasty. Smooth and layered. doubleipa (224), Georgia, USA Jun 8, 2006 This was probably the first Belgian beer I ever had. I think it was about 20 years ago. Of course it was served too cold, but it did look real nice. Good creamy head and a dark brown color. Aroma was more malt than anything else. Not much yeast. Head lasted until the end and great lacing made for wonderful appearance. A little toasted malt and dried fruit. This is really just an average beer in this category, IMHO. eaglefan538 (2351), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 2, 2006 This one far exceeded my expectations. Pour was the nice dark red-brown typical of many dubbels with a nice pillowy (but not ridiculous) head. Lacing was superb and the aroma was malty, yeasty, and spicey. Flavor was much of the same, but this was unique from the other dark Belgians I’ve had. There was a delicate bitter balance to the aftertaste and the mouthfeel was full bodied with great carbonation. Very well balanced and not overly sweetened or too rich, this one could be a "session" beer (look out ABV) and was comparable to a Belgian twisted Smithwick’s in that sense. Enjoyable. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 25, 2006 Draft @ Mad Mex: Brown color, light tan head. Aroma was very fruity, some yeast. Flavor had the same fruity componet, and a bit of spice in there as well. Dedollewaitor (3622), Odense, Denmark May 14, 2006 Rusty brown with white head. Dark fruits. Smooth feel in the mouth.´Medium carbonated. The sweetness and bitterness in the finish goes along well. A good abbey ale! jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA May 7, 2006 From 12oz. slender long neck brown bottle with a best before date on the neck label, 20/07/06, served at cellar temperature in the Corsendonk chalice that came with the gift pack. Made a good appearance, poured a cloudy red and orange hued brown with a fluffy tan head that settled into a thin fluffy lacing, good carbonation. Had a big fruity nose, apples and pears with a grainy maltiness in the background. A crisp, textured and carbonated smooth light bodied mouth feel, very good drinkability. Dry yeasty and sweet malty, apples, pears with a little spice, a nice alcohol warmth starts showing up in the middle, a touch of graininess towards the end, and dry yeasty and fruity finish.
A very drinkable Abbey Brown Ale from Corsendonk, tasty and quite quaffable.
