LadySusan (462), Ste-Therese, Quebec, Canada May 7, 2006 With its dark brown color this beer is a good example of Abbey beer. the taste is sweet and malty. with its caramel feel. This beer you should drink slowly for the full experience. JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Apr 28, 2006 750 ml bottle. Corked and caged. Best before 14/02/07. Dark brown beer with a thin tan head. Sweet malty aroma of toast, brown sugar, molasses, sweet caramel and a strong spiced rum component that I’m really digging. Sweet plum and cherry. Creamy texture. Very sweet and malty with a complex maltiness. Toast, rye, plums, rum and molasses. Light herbal hoppiness help to dry it out and keep it from becoming cloying. Lightly charred/smokey flavour. Great malty complexity. Yeast is quite subdued letting the malts shine. Very different from most dubbels I’ve had and an excellent brew. Beerdedone (1873), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 25, 2006 Updated: Apr 26, 2006Bottle sampled with Stegosaurus. Pours a hazy amber/brown color with an off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits, sweet malts, belgian spices. Flavor is cherries, sweet malts, slight belgian style spices, and smooth. jake65 (1657), Williston, North Dakota, USA Apr 24, 2006 Color is a rusty brown with a decent sized tan head. Great blend of flavors really makes this brew special. Tastes of fruitiness (mainly citrus, but some apple), chocolate, yeast, and some spice tones. Nice medium body and overall a well balanced brew. yngwie (4880), Kristiansand, Norway Apr 17, 2006 Updated: Dec 4, 2007Bottled, 33cl. Cloudy, red-orange with a beige head. Light citric, yet sweet and malty aroma. Candi-sweet flavor with bitterness. Full-bodied and with a bitter finish. Rating: 6-4-8-4-16-3.8 (060328)
Bottle, 33cl. In my head, I had memories of a slightly hazy beer, but this time it was translucent. Deep, reddish brown body, with a nice, creamy, beige head on top. Good retention and pretty lacings. Dried fruits, some fresh fruityness, a hint of yeast and a good sweetness in the aroma. Some chocolate as well. The flavor is sweet and sugary, but the sweetness is far from alone. There’s a very present flavor of dried fruits, and also a nice bitterness that lasts. It has a slightly warming mouthfeel, it’s quite sticky and full-bodied. A weak note of cocoa is also present in the flavor. As the beer warms up a bit, a subdued sour note appeares in the aroma, but it’s far from spoiling the experience. I like this one, but I don’t think it would be fair lifting my score any further. It suits the colder months best, and it gives me a little christmasy feeling. Pity it’s so unavailable here in Norway, even though it’s available at Vinmonopolet. (071204) FrankJohansen (3327), Sabro, Denmark Apr 16, 2006 Dark brown colour with a light brown fully lasting creamy head. Aroma and taste of malts, caramel and some unknown spices pjk33 (384), Sligo - Curllsville Heights, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 15, 2006 Bottle. Nose is awesome and pure Belgian... yeasty, sour, and spicy. Brown in color, decently clear, with a frothy head that laces well, but does not last. Upon first taste I get metal and blood... not quite what I expected, and certainly not what I had wished for, but I did just finish another brew and so I need to cleanse the palate a bit. Initial flavors are sort of bitter and a tiny bit sour like a sourball candy and it lasts on the middle of the tongue. I can’t really put this beer in the top third of all beers as it is sort of blah on flavor and palate. Very tiny bubbled carbonation, almost like champagne and it also has a champagne finish. Not what I look for in a beer. This is OK, but not a great beer by any means. gnoff (3559), Göteborg, Sweden Apr 15, 2006 Bottle from the "order one case" section of the Swedish "Systembolaget". December 2005. Dark amber color, creamy head. Nice Belgian strong beer scent. Warming taste. Very big body.
