Commercial Description:
Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Editor's note: Apparently production has moved from Van Steenberge to du Bocq as of Sept 2007.

0,33 LITER bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. BB 02/10/09.

App.: Deep reddish brown with a some loose, bubbly tan head. Aroma: Bright fruitiness, lots of brown sugar and some molasses, very malty with some dark dried fruits as well, sweet but with definite tang, grapes, vinous, a little citrusy and spicy. Palate: Medium body and soft but full effervescence. Flav.: Much more fruitiness with definite orange peel and citrus, still a goodly amount of brown and burnt sugars, some minty herbals, some cardboard; off-dry with a bit of brightness and a touch of bitterness.

Might be a bit tired. Still not bad.

Bottle Trappistenhuis Gent. Pours dark maroon brown with a huge head. Maybe overcarbonated or dirty glasswork but probably the first. Molasses, kandi sugar and burnt sweetness upfront. Flavor sour bitterness and bit metallic mouthfeel.

31.12.08: Very impressive bottle in tin box, but the taste was more disappointing. I am not a big fan of Belgian beer, that is probably why.

One of the classics. Dark brown brew with thick, rocky head. Malty and sweet nose, with fruits, caramel, spices. The taste is sweet with the caramel and fruits coming back, including dark berries. Warming with slightly bitter finish. Excellent.

Picked up single 750 ml bottle at Cellars Wine & Spirits. Pours a semi-clear dark brown brew with a thick and lumpy off-white head that has some nice retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, some light toffee, hint of chocolate, cinnamon and some raisin. Taste is sweet, medium to full bodied, with flavors of dark caramel malt, raisin, a hint of prunes, candi sugar, and some cherry. Finish is semi-sweet, a mild alcohol warmth with a sweet caramel and raisin aftertaste. Nice!

Pours a dark brown color that allows just a hint of amber light around the edges. Head is off-white and quickly fades to about 1/4 inch and holds, some lacing observed. The Aroma is rich with raisins, chocolate, toffee, and Belgian spices. The flavor mirrors the mirrors the aroma with emphasis on the spices (Cardamon, cloves, and allspice). The mouthfeel was medium, smooth an satisfying; the carbonation was lively and appropriate. The finish was long with dried fruits. Overall: This is an excellent Belgian. Recommended.
