Commercial Description:
Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Editor's note: Apparently production has moved from Van Steenberge to du Bocq as of Sept 2007.

Bottle. Medium brown pour, big tan fizzy head. Some citrus mixed with malt and hops in aroma. Taste is that of a rather assertive Belgium ale, yet the alcohol never overwhelms. Slightly yeasty as well, with some hints of grape sourness. Overall, a very good beer, more than I was expecting from an LCBO giftpack!

Some light malty sweetness, barnyard mustiness, and mild yeasty astringency. Cloudy brown-red with some particulates, and foamy off-white lacing head. Medium body with medium-high carbonation. Starts with yeasty sweetness, estery notes, and mild citrus astringency. Light alcohol taste. Sweetness throughout and decent bitter dryness in the finish. A bit watery but fruity. Mild apple after. Decent ale.

Bottle; Had a mediun sweet and chocolate malt aroma. Black body with tan head and some lacing. Flavor had a good chocolate dry malt with some added sweetness and moderate bitterness. Left dry coco mix and cigar aftertaste on palate. Good Brew.

With a full airy head and beautiful brown color, this is definitely one of the best beers i've ever had. Period.

Thanks, Dortmunder! Syrup nose - lighter than I expected or wanted overall. Dark shimmering clear brown color and a tall fluffy head. Yeasty unfiltered malt body with a touch of toffee and raisins. Toasted grains leave a dry spicy deposit on the lips at the end. Full body. Rather simple, really, but certainly enjoyable.

25 oz bottle, Stateline Liquors. Got this because I called in a phone order to be picked up by someone else and gave the wrong number, oh well. Pours a mostly clear brown colored body under a very fizzy beige head that had very long retention due to the vigerous carbonation. Aroma is fairly simple, lightly fruity with a slight sourness and a good amount of yeast. A hint of chocolate malt also. Flavor is quite fruity as well with some raisons and plums. Some yeast and light alcohol on the finish with that light lactic sourness that is the downfall of this beer. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with alot of fizzy prickly carbonation. Finish is a little sticky. Overall, a beer I’m not particularly fond of these days. I don’t care for that light acidic/lactic finish.

The aroma from this beer is spectacular, full of sweet fruits and yeast. Beautiful colour, and a big head that lasts for ages. The flavour wasn’t quite as assertive as I expected based in the aroma, but was still pleasant, fruity and malty. Don’t come looking for hoppiness, however, ’cause you won’t find much of that here.

Hazy brown coloured body with a super dense off-white head. Aroma of brown sugar, some root veg qualities (potatoes), cherries, nutmeg and definate malt. Medium to Full-bodied; Tart cherry flavour right up front followed by a large malt presence with the spicey qualities arising. Aftertaste is a good astringent maltiness with some sweet flavours and a bit of a drying feeling. Overall, a damn good dubbel, definately one to try! I got this 33 cL bottle courtesy of DougShoemaker at our last party in Toronto and sampled it on 26-May-2004. Thanks again Doug for everything!!
