COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Editor’s note: Apparently production has moved from Van Steenberge to du Bocq as of Sept 2007.

Quality stuff but disappointing for my palate. Aroma and flavor just seemed burnt without anything else discernible going on. Rusty aftertaste. Greatly prefer other doubles like grimbergen or westmalle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Deep hazy red brown color with nice creamy tan head. Fruit notes are at beginning then belgian yeast flavour and at end sweet with brown sugar and caramel. It’s medium bodied beer. You must try this.

Poured this beer from the bottle into a 4oz sampling glass. The beer had a dark brown-copper color with a dark amber hue, and off-white creamy head with average retention, good cling, and good lacing. Its aroma featured sweet fruity raisin and plum tones with a touch of molasses, and bits of earthy and pine hops, along with some yeast and chocolate. Its taste had a fruity, raisin sweetness at the start, that gradually faded into an earthy bitterness. The beer was somewhat thin with a light body and feel, was dry, and had lower carbonation and life. Thank you to Eric and Siobhan for the tasting.

April 2008: from BA. 0.33L Bottle, drank 4 months after its Best Before date. Poured into one of my Corsendonk stemmed glasses it looked great. Deep ruby red, clear but thick looking too. A huge light biege coloured head sat on top, lovely. Yeast and malted barley really hit your nose, a good smelling Dubbel. Strong malty taste with a treacle sweetness which isn’t over the top. Not sickly sweet, but almost. The sweetness dominates everything else, but it enjoyed the experience and have done many times before. Not the best Dubbel by any means, but not the worst either.

Pours dark brown with thick tan head. Aroma is somewhat lacking it seems - something vaguely gassy... maybe some sour fruit lingering in there somewhere... not much to report on. The taste is lovely however: starts sweet, a little cloying, before developing into a thick roasted apple and liquorice mouthful finishing with some fruitcake and dry spices. The body is a little sticky, which isn’t great, and perhaps a little too carbonated too, but the taste is lovely enough to make up for this.

330ml bottle, poured into Leffe chalice. Very ddark ruby colour, thick, two finger thin tanned head which disappeared fast. Malty, citrus, hoppy vanilla smell. Tasted a balanced sweetness, malty with notes of orange and the liquer Quarenta y Tres (43). Mouthfull smooth but well carbonated. Very good, potentially dangerous as the booze is so well hidden.

Very dark brown, big tan head. Nose is sweet and malty, with fruity-citric notes. Taste is malty, with more citrus and strong caramel, plus some slight spice. Finish is malty, sweet, with dried fruits, spice, yeast. Smooth and gentle mouthfeel. Very nice balance.

Bottle by 06/09/14. Lightly malty nose but a lot of fruit, some yeast, and abundant lemon floor cleaner. Super abundant. Body is a dark, dark ruby with a large rocky tan head. Slick malt taste, body is thin and very sweet, raisins, light roast, deft smoke. Yeast and the orange peel and lemon cleaner as above, but softer. Port wine comparison is apt, and there’s even a nibble of hops behind all the silken sheen and slow-burn chocolate.

From the 33 cl bottle marked 06/09/14. The pour is mahogany red with a tremendous, foamy head. Aromas of yeast, dark malts, plum, and a touch of hop bitterness. The body is roundabout medium. The taste brings out a sharp bitter quality with a subtle smoky character. A fine Dubbel.
