Voted supreme champion of the Maltings Beer Festival immediately after its launch in 1994, this classic premium ale continues to win many accolades. Traditionally brewed with pale, crystal and chocolate malted barley and selected Herefordshire whole hops. A copper bronzed ale with hints of toffee and vanilla. The finish is malty and nutty with a gentle sweet finish. Finalist in the 2000 & 2005 Champion Beer of Britain Competition, 2001 Good Beer Guide "Beer of the Year" and Champion Beer 1994 Maltings Beer Festival.

Aroma of caramel malts slight smokiness. Copper body and good lacing. Nicely balanced with the toffee malts set against the hops. Easy drinking. Solid as its reputation suggests.

Cask at the Hounslow JDW, dark red-brown with a lasting taupe head, malty and nutty, sharp herbal bitterness, but also unpleasantly woody. End of the barrel? Should have asked for a taste first.

Bottle from Tesco, pours a brown coper amber colour with minimal head which doesn’t hang around long. Smell is malt and slight earthy hops. Taste is mild sweet and mild bitter, quite nicely balanced. A bit thin although slightly oily too. Overall a decent bitter.

Nice one. Will try again. Amber appearance caramel flavours and good bite on palate. Seems stronger than advertised. Taste enjoyable. Overall pretty good.

Cask at Putney JDW. Free due to being the last of the cask. Hazy orange brown, still, very big foamy tan head endures. Aroma is musty, damp, socks. Body is medium, low carbonation, smooth. Taste is biscuity malts, soft and watery, light bitterness. Some vegetal notes bringing this down, but the condition is clearly not perfect (hence the free beer). Will have to revisit.

Das Bier ist fast klare, kastanienbraun und es hat eine geringe aber feine beige Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr hopfig, nussig, fruchtig, Karamell. Geschmack leicht röstmalzig, nussig, Karamell, gering hopfig bitter, ok!

Bottle from Tesco in Ryde shared with McTapps. Medium dark brown and clear. Upfront some chocolate, bit of coffee, some roasted malt and toffee. In the aftertase a fine touch of nuts and malt. Fine one.
