3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
BC from Duncan Murray Wines, Market Harborough, 5%. Mahogany with ruby glints and a fine diminishing beige collar. Sweet plummy aroma with strawberry jam, liquorice and apple yeastiness pushing an 8. Tangy but burnt with bramble hints giving way to roasted barley, burnt toast and general charred nuttiness. Some yeast extract, alcohol and charcoal presence nodding towards a considerably stronger beer. Carbonised pistachio and cocoa linger. Still looking for a bad beer from Cotleigh, and this isn’t it.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
50cl bottle. Poured dark brown, very thick, foamy beige head. Blackcurrant hits my nose at first, followed by sweet malty and roasty notes. Flavor is quite much the same, finishes very dry. Not a porter for my taste. Too sweet and the berries didn´t fit in there.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
500ml bottle. Clear dark ruby red colour with huge, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Fruity aroma has notes of red and dark berries, a dry touch of fruit parings. Taste is initially minimally sourish fruity, red and dark berries, later with subtle undertones of milk chocolate and a nuttily touch, minimally salty liquorice overtones . Relatively light.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Deep brown with thin head, tart aroma with touch of coffee, touch of blackcurrant and coffee in body, but overwhelmed by musty sour edge. Not right.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Dry, medium to full bodied.
Roasted, aromatic taste, malt, caramel, chocolate, earth, yeast. The finish brings something that reminds me of cork taint. A bit odd. (2009-06-08)

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Half-pint of the newer 5% ABV version: hand-pulled in the Cock Hotel, Wellington, Shropshire on 18th Nov 2012. I know Cotleigh have a bit of a name for brewing loads of boring ’samey’ beers, but this is different and good.
Almost black in appearance: good head of foaming biege coloured bubbles sat on top and refused to leave.
Roasted almost burnt maltiness to the smell and taste: this in turn suggested dark chocolate, coffee and liquorice flavours to my nose and throat.
Full bodied and fairly creamy and rich, obviously well looked after in the celler, this was in good condition. I would have had another but I was on a Sunday afternoon mission and had to visit other pubs before nightfall, pity.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 30, 2013 (bottled) It looks like a texbook porter , deep brown- only it resembles Rochefort 10 with its kick ass beige foamy head ; Nose offers nutty malts...ground coffee ,chocolate . Nice bursts of liquorice on the palate ...espresso. bitter chocolate and a rather tangy bitter-rich interplay . A quality ale !!!

Bottle, not sure where I got this from, consumed outside camper at Bo Peep campsite, Adderbury, Nr Banbury, Oxon, 03.09.10 Pours dark brown with a filmy off-white head. There is some nuttiness and a touch of tangy fruits. A light bitterness is evident but the nuttiness more than anything shows through. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov13 3.4
