Bottle. Nasty. Maybe a bad one. Pours totally flat murky brown. Aroma is some malt and old leaves. Taste is unpleasant sourness Must have been a rogue bottle but judging by other reviews I am not alone.

Cask at The Water House (JDW), Durham, Ł2.05/pint. Pours dark, ruby-brown with a small but smooth, off-white head. The aroma is largely weak; sweetish and led by caramel malts with little to distinguish it. The flavours has plenty of sweet caramel, fudge and molasses, as well as a definite smokiness, which rather than complimenting the sweeter tones rather jars with them. This is mediocre at best.

Bottle; pours amber with an off white head; aroma is mostly caramel with some malt, nuts, and light spice; taste is sweet with caramel and some malt, citrus, and hints of spice; a bit thin and watery; meh

Cask. Clear chestnut brown high a medium sized frothy off white head. Dark bread, rye, chocolate, cocoa, light wooden. Medium body, pretty smooth, long light dry and bitter finish. Soft and easy drinking.

Dried fruits, nuts, caramel, old cellar and brown sugar in the aroma. Brown with a red tint, off-white head. Medium sweet and medium bitter. Medium body with a soft carbonation. Overall a bit overwhelming unpleasant flavor and aroma of old cellar.

Cask at Queen’s Head, Uxbridge. Lovely rich dark colour with a thin-ish white head. Not hugely fragrant. Strong caramel and rich fruits. A good winter beer.

500ml bottle. Clear, ruby red glowing brown colour with small, frothy, half-way lasting, minimall lacing, off-white head. Grainy, dusty, earthy aroma, hints of old mushrooms, germinating potatoes, nutshells. Taste is dry, earthy, reproducing the same (off-)flavours. Must be something wrong with this.

Foggy dark red brown colour with a thin white head. Very cerealy black malt aroma, nothing special jumping out. Strange, almost ’green’ taste. Bottle may have been ’skunked’ as it were. Otherwise, some generic black malt flavours, not much else. A poor beer.

Bottle. Ruby with a thin head. Toffee and sour nut aroma. Flavor is toasted toffee, nut with a strange fizzy ale base. Light bitter nut finish
