3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: SEP 24, 2012 Cask at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford
Wonderful creamy pale gold beer. Typical of Cotleigh beers it is well made with good structure and balance. Has citrus fruit but enough malt to balance it and the stronger alcohol gives it the body to carry it off. Good pint 3.9. Re-rate as bottle from Sainsburys. Deep clear gold with thin white head. Syrupy malt and some orange fruit hop on aroma. Some toffee in mouth, some hops on finish. More orange syrup fruit flavour. 3.4/5

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
My first ever visit to ‘The Southampton Arms’ (London)and one of the many cask offerings was this beer: my fourth beer of a slow Saturday afternoon session (Feb 2012) was a hand-pulled pint of this, poured into an old ‘dimpled pint mug’, like all the cask ales are in this pub.
Pale for a winter brew, it almost looks like a dark lager/pilsner: golden, clear and with a thin white covering for a head.
The nose is a pleasant blend of mild biscuit malts and some floral hop smells.
Taste wise it comes alive: a hop bitterness combined with a citrus and spicy feel give the malt content something to think about, the malts respond by hitting your taste buds with non-sweetened caramel biscuits and a toffee apple.
A great last pint before moving on into central London for a Film Festival.

Hmmm... at last a Cotleigh beer I might drink more than once! 500 ml bottle served cool. Clear gold with a thin white head. Digestive biscuit aroma, and buttery biscuit flavour with a bit of citrus, fruit salad sweets circa 1968, and old leather. Vinous palate, soft carbonation, finish not quite bitter enough. Not sure that it’s a winter ale though, surely they’re stronger and darker?

This is not a winter ale in any sense most people would understand, but very impressive nonetheless. Pale in colour. Comes on a little dry after the Hop Back Winter Lightning (qv) I had just before. Bags of citric hop character and a progressive bitterness, but not at all astringent. Clean finish. An excellent, easy drinking strong bitter. Handpump, Lord Moon of the Mall, Whitehall, London SW1.

Bottle at home in London with Lyoli. Pours clear gold with a fine, white foam head. Toasty hay nose, some baked leaves, light toasty dough. Light to medium sweet flavor with a bit of wet leaf bitterness, some crunchy grains, toasted bread. Light bodied with average carbonation. Pretty mellow finish, light dry hay and leaves, some further toasty malts. Very basic stuff but quite satisfying nonetheless.

Cask in the coronet. Alround rating: Pale sweet honey malts, floral and citrus hop, quite well balanced but on the sweeter side. Alright ale.
