Produced since 1979, Tawny Bitter has become one of the most popular beers in the West Country. Brewed using Devon pale and crystal malted barley and Herefordshire hops, Tawny is a distinctive well balanced best bitter with a subtle hop palate which blends with the sweetness of the malt. Tawny has been a finalist in the Champion Beer of Britain Competition, and is a two-time Good Beer Guide "Beer of the Year".

Taster from bottle at Binnyís, Downers Grove. Fruity smell, nice amber color, a bit cloudy. Large bit of foam from this tiny sample. Taste again is fruity. Very nice, about all I can say about it. Excellent version of this style, why Iím rating it up.

Bottled 500ml (AbM)
Clear copper color, small off-white head. Aroma has odd cellary hops with hints of crystal malts. Light-bodied. Flavor is also on heavy earthy hoppy side with back crystal malts although not really sweet. 3.8% is not a problem. Odd.

Bottle from Gardiner Haskings, Bristol. Appearance: small head, which disappears quickly, amber gold colour, very little hazy, fair lacing. Aroma: malts - grain, coffee, also a bit of apple. Taste: sweet with bitter aftertaste. Palate: light to medium bodied, medium bitter finish, flat. Overall: Not bad, although could have been more bitter.

500ml . In a pint . One of the last beers from a gift pack that Uncle Steve got me @ Christmas . Brown Bitter customary colour . Spicy hop nose , malty rich caramel, cake notes . Quite well balanced in textures . This ainít the type of beer Iíd buy myself , and its obviously going to score higher if Cask , but not a bad bottled ale .

500ml bottle from Tuckers Maltings. Pours clear golden amber with a thin white head. Aromas of caramel, butterscotch. Taste is more of the same. Faint herbal bitter on the far flung reaches of detectability. Sweet finish, sticky and thin.

Gravity dispense at the Happy Man Spring BF, 20/03/15. Copper brown with a moderate off white cap that soon dissipates. Nose is earthy, musty, twiggy, light fruit notes, toffee. Taste comprises much the same, a feast of twig, light fruit cake, caramel. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, bitterness in the close. Boring twiggy bitter.

Cask at Six Bells, Cambridge. Tawny/copper. Fairly flat. Nice earthy/doughy smell. The taste isnít so balanced: herby bitter turning to a sour/sweet in the finish. Iíve had this many a time in my pre-RB days. Not convinced it travels so well.
