Market Porter, London. Smooth. Malty. Coffee. Chocolate. A pleasant and intriguing ale. An Autumn Ale but without the damp tea leaves. Good, interesting, smooth and delicious malt. Some rough oaky edges add extra interest. Best beer of a long day crawling around London.

Tasted this in the Saltcot, Saltcoats (JDW) in August 2009. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear copper red in colour with a thick buff head. Dry leather notes and sweet malt present in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malt complex gives a big range of flavours with rich maltloaf base laced with black treacle, prunes and clootie dumpling. Dry leather and oak wood tanins give the hops an interesting background. Vinous notes continue into the malty finish. A really good Traditional Old Ale and well recommended.

Cask (Pullman, Helsinki)
Deep reddy brown, almost no head. Dull sweet aroma - caramel and a touch old. Tired, that is. Simple body, quite dry hoppiness, some bark and liquorice. Some sulphur. Dry bitter finish. Old style bitter, but too flat. Some apple.
