2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: JUN 8, 2006 500ml bottle. Reddish copper colour. Faint US hop aroma. Seems a bit flat to me. Quite nice and juicy in mouth. Think this was a bit of a dodgy bottle, because it has signs of being very good.
Cask, handpull at Scarborough Hotel, Leeds. Gold with thin white head. US hop aroma. More aromatic than most. Quite good balance. Grapefruit hop on end. US hop aroma, quite astringent in mouth, some lime. Could do with more malt.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: MAR 19, 2012 1)Cask handpull, The Crown, Nuneaton. You’d be justified in expecting a beer called ’Goldrush’ to have at least a trace of US hops..but this is Cottage remember, so you’d be wrong.. Heavily buttered hay aroma. Red gold with no head, still condition. Vague shortbread, strawberry jam notes..strong aniseed and Bertie Bassett as it warms. Pretty dismal.
2) The Crown, 18/03/12. Bright and brassy with a white foam. Red apple yeastiness, apricot aroma. Strawberry and apple-like fruit, clean buttered grassiness, always sesame. Good finishing bitterness. Bit out of the box for Cottage. 637313.

It always happens. Just when I am all set to bemoan Cottage churning out yet another mediocre beer, I find one that’s actually rather good. Glowing golden colour. Fresh aroma, but with a surprising fruity malt element too. Crisp citric flavour with some hints of wheat. My note said it had a rather Belgian feel to it and I was pleased to see that Mungo noted that too. Only marred by slight lack of bite in the finish, but that’s a minor criticism. Cask (handpump), Head of Steam, Euston, London NW1

Cask at the Old Bell, Waltham St Lawrence. Chestnut with a loose white head; fruity malt aroma; toffee malt taste; and a Brazil nut finish. A traditional malt-lead bitter, in my opinion, so perhaps not the same beer as the one described here!

Cask, Watch House, Lewisham. Blond. Gold colour. In many ways similar to Swift Hound, but better quality all round - better mouthfeel and better definition of flavours; less muddy, more pleasant.
