COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For the lover of truly tasty English Ales come the Cottage Ale. We brewed a traditional English ESB or 'Extra Special Bitter' for this iconic Mendon establishment. Although it is called a 'bitter', that is not what you get. What you get is a wonderful beer with some bitterness that is balanced perfectly by the English crystal malts used to brew it. The aroma is earthy and malty with a floral, almost grassy character contributed by the hops added late in the boil. The flavor is bold and clean with a crisp, dry finish and an aftertaste of lightly toasted malts. These malts also give the beer its striking amber hue and creamy head. A perfect ale to be paired with hearty Cottage fare. Brewed with Pale, CaraAmber, Dark Crystal and Dark CaraMunich malts. Hopped with Target and Fuggle hops. Brewed for the Cottage Hotel, Mendon, NY.

On tap sample at Custom Brewcrafters in Honeoye Falls, NY. Clear, sparkling dark copper orange with almost no head. Good head. Floral, toffee and graham cracker aroma. Flavor includes caramel and toffee but is unusually bitter for an ESB. Lightly foamy with small bubbled carbonation, creamy mouthfeeL Very nice. Overall an odd duck. Soft and creamy, but atypically bitter for an ESB. Easy to drink but little to make it worth going out of the way for. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2010 Autumn Festival of ales - Standard looking pour. Floral hop aroma. Average body of malt and hop. The bitter ending was a little too bitter for my taste.

Hazy light orange brown with bubbly head. Toffee, graham crackers and hop notes in the aroma. Small bubbled carbonation, creamy mouthfeel, some toffee in the palate along with some hops. Neutral finish. Sampled from growler.

Sample at Cottage hotel - Hoppy nose, citrusy palate, some depth in flavor. A solid but forgettable ale.

(draft @ 2006 Autumn Festival of Ales - Honeoye Falls, NY) Copper in color with a tan head. Aroma is kind of bitter with a decent amount of hops and a touch of malts at the end. Flavor is rather bitter at the beginning with a nice and bitter hop middle and some caramel malts at the end. Not too bad, but kind of ordinary.
