3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 dogbomb (277) - ENGLAND - FEB 10, 2012
Cask at White Cross Beer Festival. Deep ruby almost black with a huge crisp cream head. Chocolatey malt smells and a rich cocoa malt taste. No alcohol burn, just a smooth rich wintery mouthful. Nice.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - NOV 25, 2011
First tasted this at the Glasgow Winter Beer Festival in February 1997. Cask, gravity dispense. Dull black in colour with a thin tan coloured head. Strong aroma of roast malt and coffee. Thin mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malt complex with rich maltloaf base laden with roast coffee, dark chocolate, treacle toffee, sultanas and syrupy dates. Slight dryness from the spicy hop resins but this soon fades as sweetness returns in the malty, roasted hazelnut praline finish. Very easy to drink due to the thin mouthfeel but the potency is there and well hidden like a true Old Ale. Highly recommended.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 downender (4389) - Bristol, Gloucestershire, ENGLAND - JAN 1, 2010
Cask-conditioned at the Staple Hill Oak (JDW), Bristol 1/1/10. Chestnut coloured with a frothy, off-white head. Sweet aroma of caramel, drinking chocolate and dates with some earthy hops. Flavour was similar, with the chocolate to the fore, plenty of caramel and a long bitter finish. A very good winter beer.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DSG (3005) - Tel Aviv, ISRAEL - AUG 9, 2008
(6/29/08) Bottle sample at RBESG08 grand tasting in Plzen. My notes say "Norman’s Extra Strong Ale", but I guess this is the one. Deep red with a medium beige head. Aroma of malt, some toastiness, light honey notes and notes of hops. Sweetish malty flavor with some toastiness and caramel, some fruits, light honey notes and a slightly drier finish. Medium-bodied.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 DonMagi (5599) - bantervile, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - JUL 21, 2008
Bottle at RBESG08. Alround rating: Iv got this as a spicey strong pale ale rather than an old ale? Alc peppery, yet thin. Annoying as this is a beer iv wanted to try for ages.
2.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 7/20 thewolf (8626) - Kolding, DENMARK - JUL 13, 2008
Bottle @ the RBESG08 Grand Tasting.
Pours brown with a small, creamy, beige head. Aroma has toffee and light hoppiness. Extremely thin mouthfeel - is this really 7 %? Weak flavour with a touch of toffee. Very boring.
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 Marko (3115) - Split, CROATIA - JUL 10, 2008
Bottle, RBESG08 Grand Tasting Murky brown body. Full malty nose. Nothing else. Boring nutty malty taste, some spice and alcohol. Ok but far from special in my opinion.
