Barreled Black IPA, our Heart of Dankness aged five months in Elmer T. Lee Bourbon barrels. Tastes as epic as your hangover will feel!

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy chocolate, moderate pine, bourbon, alcohol, and oak. It pours a dark brown with some orange highlights. It has a small khaki head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a soapy ring. The flavor starts with a quick dose of chocolate and a hint of caramel. The finish has light-moderate bourbon, pine, vanilla, and oak. It?s light-medium bodied with mild carbonation.

750ml pours a deep brown with a reddish undertone and foamy, bubbly tan head. Nose is dominated by sour oak, bourbon, and pine. Flavors of oak, vanilla, and roasted malts. Interesting beer, not many similarities to the ipa family. Slight dry bitter finish and an oily mouthfeel.

Draft at Party Town from notes. Pours dark brown color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have nice roasted malt, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla character alongside chocolate covered oranges, some earthy character, hints of pine, moderate bitterness, no sign of 12%, this makes for a very interesting and dangerous beer, ever works well together.

Bottle from Santa. Pour is dark ruby brown with white head and little lave. Nose is oaky, bourbon, sweet hops, vanilla. Very similar in nose and taste to Terrapin Rye^2 bourbon cask. Taste is also oaky, hops with some sweetness. Overall, a really nice and interesting brew.

Not bad. Has a really assertive flavor but not very IPAey. Still worth trying. Black Friday Blackout.

Draft at the source. Opaque dark brown color, brown head with solid lacing. Aroma of vanilla, maple, bourbon. Taste is boozy bourbon, vanilla, dark chocolate malt. Tasty, but resembles a BA porter, rather than a black IPA.

Draft at the brewery, served in a sampler. Pours a deep, dark coffee brown with a small khaki head that leaves a decent ring. Aroma of vanilla, dark chocolate covered orange slices, oak, earth, roasted malt, coffee, pine, and burnt brown sugar. The flavor follows mostly the same lines, with a satisfying sweetness, rich earthiness, roasted maltiness, and an underlying bitterness. Medium-bodied, fairly smooth, and with modest carbonation. Doesn’t drink up to its ABV. Complex and satisfying. My favorite of the evening.

On tap at the brewery. Very dark brown almost black pour with a tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, oak, bourbon, and just a touch of earthy hop aroma. Flavor is actually kind of sweet upfront with tons of roasted character. Notes of coffee and the earthy hops come out nicely in the finish. Delicious.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2015 8oz on tap at Party Town. Having LOVED Heart of Dankness, I’m very excited to try this one. Dark brown color, near-black. Good thin khaki head, with good retention. Leaves good, thicker lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of crisp, kind of chewy mildly soft texture, lighter carbonation. Awesome aroma of roasty malt, dark chocolate, coffee, earthy hops, mild pine. An interesting bit of complex bourbon aroma, kind of spicy and woody, with a nice mildly warming aftertaste. Moderate to bigger sweet taste, moderate bitter. A bit sweeter than the base beer, from what I remember. A nice mild amount of warmth, just fine for 12%. The big flavor and big chewy body works with the alcohol nicely. Overall, a very fun beer to sip on. Kind of drinks more like a hoppy barrel-aged stout than a black IPA, but I can’t complain at all. Good stuff any way you look at it. A treat to try. 8/4/7/4/17

Update -- 32oz torpedo growler, shared by connor, 1/5/15: Dark brown color, kid of clear. Thin off-white ring of head. Dots of lace. Lots of orange citrus on this guy, more than I remember. Wonderful vanilla flavor. Great big earthy hop, mildly piney. Hides the alcohol well. Impressive citrus and dark chocolate. Leaving scores unchanged for now.
