Kentucky Fried Charleston Trip Beer #37. Draft at the brewery. Listed as XXX on the chalkboard, but I could detect no bourbon, and I believe the commercial description neglects to mention it. Pours a clear medium brown color with a thin creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of strong jalapeno. Some mild smoke peeks out and a bit of roast in the finish. The taste is strong jalapeno heat, roast, caramel, mild smoke. Medium bodied, lingering heat.

For clarity, this rating is for the "XXX" version of CBB J.S. Porter. I will also rate the "original" version on its rating page. Poured from draught at the CBB taproom into a pint glass, dark brown with a nice tan head which faded pretty quickly to a smooth thin layer. The aroma is smoky and peppery, distinctly jalapeño, with faint hints of cocoa, caramel, the subtlest hint of the ABV and hop presence. The aroma dominates as I taste balanced sweetness, subtle bitterness, the faintest hint of sourness, and there is something else, and my mouth tries to figure out if it needs to start chewing. The body is medium to slightly heavy and the carbonation feels livley but not overstated. The aromas are almost screaming, "Chipotle! Hot! Caliente!" as my mouth, still confused and entertained is taking in the subtle bitterness, and subtle sweetness, and then the heat sets in and it is a good thing that I like heat. I like hot stuff but I have never really liked a chile flavored beer, until Nacho Bait, but that is another review, I never was really impressed with any smoked beers, and now this stuff has practically become my favorite beer of all time. Everything CBB has got going on in this one creates a little bit of sensory overload and confusion at first, but in the end my mouth is really happy and it wants more!

Aroma of moderate jalapeno, a little salt and chocolate. Appearance is black with tan head. Flavor packs a little more heat than their other JSP; but manageable- the overall flavor is more distinctly jalapeno. Palate is bubbly and chewy. Nice; would be great with Mexican food.

Sampled courtesy of Ryan. Chile is definitely present. But not an overwhelming presence; i.e., no intense heat. Pure taste. Not a chile head in beer, but I can get this.
