COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask Ale. Regular.
Originally brewed in Courage's Anchor brewery on the south bank of the Thames. It was moved to the Berkshire brewery at Reading in the 1970s, then to the Courage Brewery in Bristol. When Bristol closed in 1999 it moved to Tadcaster. Following ScotCo's reshuffle in 2004 it was contract brewed by Youngs, returning it to a site on the south bank of the Thames. In Jan 2007 the Courage brand was purchased by Wells & Young and production moved to Bedford.
Courage Best has long been one of the best selling cask beers in the South of England.

I rated every aspect of this beer as close to medium as possible as that reflects my feelings on it. Its an average bitter - nothing exceptional about it and nothing bad. Its got hops, malt slight citrus twang. As a review below puts it: ’Bit dull, but ok’. Sums it up nicely.

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. I’m having this as SilkTork said it was better than it used to be and also because it is now being brewed by Wells & Young’s. It’s fine. A little bit bitter shandyish. Some yeasty aroma, some lemony citrus, some malt. Not a lot of hop on finish. Bit dull, but ok.

Suddenly this is everywhere in Bedford, its new home. Had it today at the Pilgrim’s Progress (JDW). Then a half at Bedford Athletic Rugby Club. Amber with a white head. Faint fruity aroma. Pleasant sour fruit and malt taste. Some slight bitterness. It was quite good.

Cask at The Chequers, Woodley, Berkshire Hazy copper colour with a soapy head, very easy to drink, predominantly malty with no real bitterness.

JFURYCAT (1079) - East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 9, 2006
An easily drinkable beer with a pleasant malt profile but nothing else to drive the senses. It doesn’t seem bitter at all but has some creaminess to it and some dryness but not enough.

Cask at the Kingsholm Pub, Gloucester, 02-09-06. Suprised that I hadn’t rated this before and also that it tasted better than I expected. Whilst this lacked in many departments it was a decent enough copper coloured easy quaffing ale that in a pub outside the Rugby ground I had not expected to find a half decent pint in.

A Mes rate: Cask at a JDW. Hmm quite amazed I have not rated this one before. Sweet and fruity, seriously lacking in hoppy character and with a dry wooden finish. Yeah yeah, well done Youngs...

Cask@The Tyburn, London. Amber color, tan head. Woody nutty aroma. Malty, nutty. Sweetness in the finish, some hops in the aftertaste. Good malt profile, nice session beer.

Cask. Clear, non-carbonating, copper-colored bitter with a small white head. Fruity aroma, with hops and lemon dominating. The flavor has a subdued maltiness as well. The body is quite thin and watery and the finish is fruity. More maltyness all the way would be nice. (060713)

ALLOVATE (2098) - Butler, AUSTRALIA - JUL 27, 2006
Handpump, Prince Alfred, Bayswater.
Bright tawny copper body with a thin off-white pad of foam that held. Short-lived toffee and ash nose. Thin in body and watery. Stale hops, caramel and burnt toast sum it up. Touch of bitterness on the swallow before a dry yeasty swallow that was short. Pretty below par bitter, but nothing too offensive in it.
