Amber coloured, thin lacing foamy layer; shy malty nose, hints of vegetables/mushrooms; very light fruity and malty taste; very short almost watery finish; too bland = disappointing !

As is typical for a national beer, it varies hugely depending where you drink it and whether it’s keg or cask. When it’s good in cask, it’s an inoffensive pint with a lingering hoppy taste, when it’s not in good condition or from a keg it’s a typical bland identikit bitter

2.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 leaparsons (6324) - Leicester, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - NOV 1, 2004
Amber with a small white head. Aromas are sulphur and spicy hops - a bit thin. Flavours are equally thin, having more sulphur with hints of fruit. Quite sweet. Not the Best at all.

Cask at the Chesire Cheese in London. Ruddy brown body with no head. Aroma seems floral hoppiness and not much else. Taste is hoppy with some sweetened flavors not revealed in the aroma. Body seems much more watery than I had experienced to this point in London. Finish is light bitterness and more of the sweet flavors coming through.
2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 kwik-lime (654) - London, ENGLAND - SEP 6, 2004
A smooth and drinkable pint, but not the most interesting. Slightly bitter and somewhat watery.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2007 Feb, 2003: Tadcaster brewed. The Alma, Sidcup. A standard pint - quite fruity with a dry hoppy finish. Thin bodied and refreshing. An acceptable but not outstanding session beer. The dry bitterness gradually overwhelms. [ 1.7]
Oct 2004: Youngs brewed - 5 bells, Seal near Sevenoaks. An average village pub. This beer varies considerably. It is noticeably better on cask than in the keg, but even that depends on the skills of the pub cellarman. This was tried in a CAMRA recommended pub. The nice fruit up front is typical of all the experiences, but the mouthfeel here was softer and fuller. the finish is dry and dark, quite dusty and earthy, better than the keg and poor cask conditions, but still not an exceptional beer. [2.4]
Jan, 2007: Brewery unknown - The Engineers Mate, Gillingham Wow! Fresh and fruity with a fresh hop bite in the finish. I’ve never had a Best so good. Stunning! Whoever brews this at the moment, they are doing a brilliant job. [3.8]

Cask conditioned. This "best" could be easily found anywhere in London. Mild malty aroma, soft fruity notes. Drinkable but hopophobic.

Had this one at St.James Tavern, Picadilly Circus, London. Nothing special...run of the mill bitter. Not too bad.
