COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask: Regular.
Originally brewed at Alton Brewery in Hampshire in 1903 for the Courage directors; spare beer was sold as Alton IPA, which acquired the nickname of Director’s Bitter.
Moved to the Courage owned Simonds Brewery in 1969, then to the Anchor Brewery in Bermondsey, then, in 1981 to Bristol. When Courage was taken over by Scottish and Newcastle, production moved to John Smith’s brewery in Tadcaster. Production was later contracted out to Youngs in London, and in Jan 2007 the Courage Brand was purchased by Wells & Young who brew it in Bedford.

cask. rank . I can’t stand this and would rather be seen dead and drinking Corona with a lime than this Grandpha piss.

Cask at the Wharf Aalborg. Amber in colour with not head. Aromas of caramel, sweet malts and glue. A malty sweet flavour that somewhat reminds me of wallpaper paste. Weak light body. One of the weakest beers from Wells & Youngs!

On tap at a pub in central London. Not much aroma, very simple flavours and served quite warm even for a bitter. Very drinkable though, but nothing to really differentiate it from the pack.

500ml. Deep amber colour, almost copper with a slight off white head. Appears full bodied in the glass with a spicy hop aroma . Well balanced and good medium level of bitterness. Fruity flavour with a strong aftertaste. Good well rounded offering.

Handpulled cask more than a few times over the years. I remember when it was brewed in London during the 70’s. It was really decent when you could find although there wasn’t many competitors locally in it’s class. It’s changed brewers 3 times since then and has seemingly worsened each time. The Bedford brewed version has not reversed the trend.
