FatPhil (2012), Espoo, Finland May 19, 2008 Cask (Penny Black, Bicester) (2004)
Another quite bold bitter - rich malty body, sticky dark hops, decent dry bitter finish. Was missing something. Might rerate, to see if Wells have ruined it or improved it.
kmacphail (24), Isle of Lewis, Scotland Jun 28, 2008 I sampled my first pint of this in Blackfriars, Glasgow.
A copper coloured beer with a hint of ruby and a decent slightly off white head, which gave good retention and left marks for the duration of the pint.
The nose was malty and caramel followed by a citrus burst along with some hops, a very nice balance.
This continued through to the taste, a nice flavour of malts and caramel/toffee initially followed by a burst of fruitiness and hops in the aftertaste.
The medium-light body was unexpected for a dark coloured beer, but this did make it very drinkable. I delayed plans to move on and sampled another. Pyobon (133), Sydney, Australia Jun 25, 2008 Clear brown with white head. Sulphur aroma. Light body and carbonation. Taste not terribly pleasant with a sharp seawater tang.
EHSRanders (670), Randers C, Denmark Jun 12, 2008 Cask at Prince Alfred, Bayswater. Clear amber colour with medium creamy white mostly diminishing head. Malty and hoppy aroma. Sweet bitter flavor. thewolf (3416), Kolding, Denmark Apr 24, 2008 Cask @ some Soho pub, London.
Pours lightly hazy amber with a small, creamy off-white head. Aroma is light caramel and weak hops. Mouthfeel is (even for a cask), a bit flat. Flavour is quite bitter, mildly dry, but generally uninteresting.
