Bottle. Aroma has notes of dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, smoke, a little peat, and dark red fruits on the finish. Nice. Black with a small tan head that mostly diminished and left little lace. Flavor is very sweet and bitter. Palate is full bodied and oily soft. Overall a solid RIS with good aroma and drink-ability.

Bottle. There is not much on the nose with this one. Burnt malts and hay perhaps. The body and palette are really good. This is a little less assertive than the super Impys that are coming out these days but maybe that is closer to the style in the end. Overall its a solid impy and a living piece of brewing history. A bit over priced for what it is but its still good.

Deep dark brown with a big beige head that slowly fades down to a film. Nice lacing. Aroma is chocolate, raisins, toffee, and figs. Taste is smoke, wood, dark fruits, alcohol, and molasses. Alcohol is somewhat numbing on the tongue and warms on the way down.

2012 Vintage Aroma is dominated by dark chocolate and moderate coffee and espresso. moderate fruit character including cherry, plum and pear. Light smokiness and low alcohol note. Really nice complex malt aroma. Pours black with some dark brown notes on the edges. Moderately thick mocha head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges. Light lacing. Flavor is similar to the aroma with lots of chocolate, roast and light smoke. The roast is dark coffee with a light smoked meat quality. Moderate fruit quality with cherry, plum, prune and berry. Some smokiness in the finish with a bit of an ashy character. Medium low bitterness. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium alcohol warmth. Low creaminess. Overall a very nice imperial stout with good malt complexity that is well balanced with the fruitiness from the yeast. The chocolate and roast are well balanced.

Bottle of I’m guessing 2012 vintage, bottle #53196 purchased at Ale Wine & Spirits. Dark brown pour with a thick tan head. Aroma of malt, raisin, chocolate, creamy vanilla and light roast. Malty and raisiny flavor with some alcohol before a chocolatey and roasty finish. Different, and pretty nice.

My Bottom Line:
This dessert of an Imperial Stout joins prunes, milk chocolate, roasted cereals and caramel, leading them to a heavy yet harmonious finish.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slim slice of foam garnishes the darkness.
-This lacks hop character in the finish (for my tastes in the style).
-Carbonation is rather low, which makes the sweetness feel heavier.
-The nose is very expressive and predicts the sweet onslaught.
-Unripe pears also appear in the flavor profile.

Bottle.

Traded bottle with a best before date, 19/09/24, sometime after my youngest would graduate college. I’ll be honest, I thought this would be a little lackluster just because it is comes from just a large producer but this was really tasty. Lots of coffee and bitter chocolate. Maybe a touch boozey but good overall.
