Lovely peppery almost sickly sweet around. Dark chocolatey malts with hint of vanilla. Very dark brown. Surprisingly light head. Full brown malty nutty flavor with thick mouthfeel. The strength of the alcohol is visible but goes so well the the nutty flavours and texture. Fantastic effort from courage.

YUM! This is dense black in colour with minimal head. Smell: initially what hits me is Marmite! This is not a bad thing at all, instantly followed up with dark chocolate, coffee and malty barley. Taste is sweet initially before the toasted malts come through and coffee with dark (dark) chocolate, along with some malted dried fruits. Although the smell of Marmite hit my nostrils and is noticable in the taste it certainly isnít prevalent. Heavy and oily feel in the mouth with light carbonation. An absolutely fantastic heavy stout which is perfect for winter evening drinking. I will definitely buy again and I intend to keep one back for a few years and see how this alters the taste.

Bottle. 2013 vintage. Pitch black pour with a finger of head. Young beer, thus still a hard dark espresso roast. A lot of mineral, acidic bitter chocolate, roasted nuts. Smooth, medium body with silky carbonation. Very nice. Would love to have this in 2-3 years

2012 Vintage. Pours with a deep tan head, coffee aroma, burnt toast. Taste is smooth cocoa with a fine hop balance lingering, some marzipan, resin, coffee beans, dark chocolate. A good balance, easy drinking for its strength, hints of soy when left to warm but not overpowering. The 2013 vintage is not quite there yet. I last had this in 1992 in 170 ml bottles from Bottoms Up, Milton Keynes and sold my remaining 20 year old bottle last year on ebay!

Draft at GBBF 2013 - London. Pours black with a creamy tan head. Lovely stuff, lots of creamy chocolate, moderate alcohol, well roasted malts. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish but not cloying with more chocolate character and roasty malts. Rich and tasty.

275ml. Tar pour with a fat manila collar. Roasted veg and yeast extract aroma with brine, peppery alcohol and fudge hints. Slick and rusted with a somewhat flimsy charred posh crisp (beetroot) and fudge profile. Burnt Twiglet finish with ill-suited soapy hop. Pleasant warmth and bitter espresso roast. Needs time. Or mixing with Advocaat.

Bottle from Tomlinsons Beer Shop, Inverness [231213] 2012 Vintage
Pitch black, no head, no lacing. Aroma of rich meaty dark malts, deep soy sauce, some rich dark fruits, vinous notes, dab of leather, bit earthy, soft alcohol. Taste of rich dark malts, very soft roast, dab of tar, soy, some meaty roast malts, liquorice, woody, dab of dark molasses and chocolate, complex stuff, alcohol is very well hidden. Palate - very soft carb, medium body- itís a bit light in body but fine for this beer, soft sweet with light burnt bitter notes. Finish as main flavour, all those complex dark malts, slightly smoky, soy, smooth tail.
Overall - Complex flavour and not heavy...really nice old-fashioned impy. Certainly the best beer Iíve had from Wells and Youngs!

Bottle from Testicles. Nearly black. Thin, tan head. Licorice, blackberry, leather, dried vinous fruit. Taste is brown sugar sweet, then dark chocolate tangy. Palate is thick, oily, and quite frankly, delicious. Long, bitter finish. Best value beer of the year!
