275mL bottle from By the Bottle. May 2011 bottle date. A: Pure ink black with a dense creme head. Pour is quicker than I might expect. Legs are noticeable. N: Intense, smoke, leather, and tobacco. Prunes and raisins and rye bread. Very peppery. Dense and rich with a notable essence of dark fruits. Hops show up with the earth and peppercorn. T: Bitter hops and baker’s chocolate dryness. Very very spicy in a black pepper way. Very much in the vein of the hopped-up stout. M: Oily and medium heavy body. Very prickly. Could use some more heft, but the alcohol is well-hidden. O: really good stuff. It’s well balanced and deft of hand. I want to buy more and age it for the long haul.

Really deep mahogany pour with ample tan head. Lots of chocolate on the nose, licorice, toasted malt, bread, and a slight earthy hop. Smells amazing, not as roasty as an American. Really powerful taste. Robust body with hit of coffee, chocolate, some dark fruit and a strong earthy hop finish. Bit of hot booze, but not overwhelming. More flavors come out as the beer warms, very complex and well made. A real treat from England. Thank you Catherine the Great for ordering this!

Not really my cup of tea to be honest. Pretty weak with foam and a little too sweet.

Poured from a bottle thanks to Jeremy. We had this along side a 1975 and 1976 bottle. The older bottles were tastier beers. This had a odd fishy/smoky character, roasted malts, chocolate, malty. A good imperial stout.

Taste starts with coffee and dark chocolate. Roasted aftertaste. Nice but with the high ABV I would expect more taste and complexity.

Bottle at home, from BOE, 13/04/13. Bottle #122,815 of 210,000. Mid black with a big frothy tan head that retains well. Nose is roast malt, molasses, dark treacle toffee, cocoa powder, brown sugars. Taste comprises, dark roast malts, touch of booze, chocolate, dark treacle toffee, light soapy notes. Full bodied, soft carbonation, pitched perfectly, makes for fairly effortless drinking of such a big beer! Overall a more than decent offering, looks great, feels great, the flavour profile is solid enough - the alcohol is well disguised and the feel on the palate is first rate. I’d take this one again any day!

Bottle. Brewed May, 2011. Best before 9/19/24. Consumed 4/7/13. Pours an opaque brown-black with an oily, thick, light brown head. Aroma is big and wow; dark fruit, chocolate, caramel, molasses, licorice, booze. Taste is rich and wonderful; dark fruits, booze, vanilla, chocolate, caramel; bitter chocolate and coffee finish. Some nice lacing. Medium-low carbonation; appropriate. Full-bodied; thick, creamy, syrupy. Expertly balanced. Highly indulgent. Exquisitely crafted. Excellent.
