As Originally brewed in 1795 for Catherine the Great of Russia. Enjoy now or allow to mature in the cellar. Brewed to perfection only once a year, Courage Imperial Russian Stout enjoys a rich, espresso body with pear overtones and an intriguing fresh smokey, fruity finish.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - #156565, 2012 Vintage - BBE 16/08/25, from Systembolaget, 20130215) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had liquorice, roasted malts, dark chocolate and saltiness. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, liquorice, sweetness, dark chocolate, cocoa and bitterness. Aftertaste was rosty, ashy and bitter. A bit too sweet and aftertaste was too harh. Aging would quite likely soften both. Othrwise nicely balanced and alcohol was quite well hidden.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Very dark, fluffy brown head. Cocoa and spices in the nose. Incredibly smooth, Milk chocolate, yet a fine bitterness underneath. Alcohol warming, but no raw edge. Nice to have an imperial stout that has not been tortured in an oak barrel with spirits for a change.

Poured from severely expensive 275ml bottle (May 2011) - Big beers do come in small packages! Damn this thing is heavy--it feels heavy and nice on the palate as well. Caramel, chocolate, espresso, and roasty tones are counterbalanced by a considerable hoppiness. Alcohol very well hidden @ 10 pct.

275ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a medium beige head, which lasts well and leaves reasonable lacing. There s a fair amount of pear in the aroma, along with sweetish alcohol and a touch of oak. Mild herbal and spice hops up front give way to sweet drinking cocoa and mild black coffee. Charry, slightly smoky oak comes through in the finish. Whilst an enjoyable beer, this is fairly simplistic for an imperial stout. I suspect it is closer to the original export strength stouts sent to Russia than most modern imperial stouts are, especially as it at least claims to be the original version shipped there in 1795. An interesting one.

Wee man from Sam’s, Durham. This one kind of slipped into town unheralded, funny for such a highly coveted beer (guess it’s not Hopslam durrrrrr). 8 ounces of chocolate sludge for a pour, with a silky cafe au lait head and tons of nice lacing. Rich nose of chocolate and dark fruit, mild smoke and coffee bean too. Velvety mouthfeel, and just a bit of chalk in the finish. Huge dark fruits and intense roasts dominate the taste, but that’s right where you want a beer like this to be. Nice.

Pours black with big brown head. Aroma of dark chocolate and licorice. Taste of licorice, roasted malt, dark chocolate. Oily thick consistence. A bit week in the finish but there is some warming alcohol.
