Cask conditioned at Peterborough Beer Fest ’13. Black with slight cream head. Super smooth but highly alcoholic in character, lots of plummy fruit notes, some coffee, some liquorice. Heavy old stuff, but worth the effort.

Aug 2013 - Cask at GBBF, half pint. Black with hardly any head. Smell - some crayon, roasted barley, slight bubblegum. Body is medium with low carbonation. Taste - aniseed, coffee, roasted barley and a liquorice finish. A bit vegetal. Good balance for a beer this strong. I wasn’t that fussed on it overall though. (3.6)

Nov 2015 - Bottle share thanks to Paul - 2012 vintage, bottle #172645, 10%. To compare with the 1977 vintage opened at the same time. Black, small white head. Aroma is chocolate syrup, touch of yeast. Body is medium, tingly carbonation, smooth. Taste is chocolate, yeasty, twiggy bitterness. Smooth, rounded. Decent. (3.7)

Black with tan head. Aroma of coffee, roast, dark caramel, Sherri. Taste of roast, coffee, chocolate, Sherri, burnt sugar. Oddly light for such a heavy beer. Warm alcohol going down the throat.

Poured from 9.3 oz bottle- pours like a thick hot chocolate, dark brown in color with light brown thick frothy head. Flavor is a dull smokey licorice with prevalent characters of alcohol and bitterness.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2013 Bottle from Kris Wines. 2012 Vintage. Opaque black, tan head that disspates to nothing. Nose is Marmite, salty, pure dark chocolate, dark fruit esters, prune, raisin, antique wood, rum, alcohol. Taste is, similar to the Thornbridge version of the recipe. It’s quite hard, very alcoholic, caramel, ale fruity, roasted malt, little salty, dark bitter chocolate, roast coffee, lots of black treacle, pear wine. It’s very distinctive but maybe not as smooth and soft as many modern Impy Stouts. Also quite dry. I find this a little too hard and maybe not so complex as others, so palate score only gets a 3 from me. However, will keep a bottle to age as I think it will soften. 3.5 bottled rating Cask rating at GBBF 2013. Opaque very very dark brown, off white head. Nose is roasted malt, golden syrup, dark choc, little bit of ale fruity, slight estery, cereal grain. A lot going on in this. Taste is medium bodied, roasted malt, light dark chocolate, very light dark fruit, aromatic. Very dangerously drinkable. 4.2.
