3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Total Wine, Naples. The pour’s deep brown with a massive tan head. The nose is chocolate syrup, some artificial sweetener, roasted malts, ash. The taste is toffee-dipped coffee, very sweet milk chocolate, light roasted malts. Syrupy thick palate. Oily. Not too hot. The ABV is well hidden. Overall, pretty decent. The slightly artificial sweetness holds this back a bit.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Perfectly black colored body in the glass. There is a thin orange brown tinted head. The nose is sweet with lots of prunes and tobacco. There is also some anise and a little bit of vinous goodness. Tasting this one is interesting considering it has a slightly chalky mouthfeel. The tastes that come up front are strong anise and orange peel. There is also some dark chocolate and a sharp note of lightly ashy tobacco, but it’s not a bad thing. There is a smooth finish that lingers with the citrus and anise. A smooth frighteningly easy to drink body helps make this one an absolute pleasure on the palate. Nicely done and better than most imperial stouts I have had recently.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle 153040, L2229. Pours black with thin dark brown head. Fruity and caramelly aroma more than roasted. Chocolate, notes of vanilla, pears, apricots, a hint of smoke and a hint of sour cream. Somewhat closed aroma might be due to young age. This will really take off when it begins to age. Some sulphur notes surprises. Slight caramelly, burnt sugar notes.
The taste is similar to the nose. Burnt malt with an acrid tint is almost drowned in the sweetness from the malt. Vanilla and sugar is there, as well as the fruit. Pears and plums, but also red currants and strawberries. Finally the acrid roast makes a desperate attempt to clasp through the almost cloying sweetness. The bitterness is well balanced against the malt, but the residual sugars are still wrestling with the young burnt notes. Hopefully some age will bring notes of leather into the mix, or it might turn up too sweet for my taste. The palate is velvety smooth, but on the full side. The roast finishes dry, almost astringent.
This beer is much sweeter than when Courage still made it. I don’t find much in common with the older versions from pre-WW2. A good beer but slightly sweet.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2012 vintage...#117235 of 210000. Pours dark brown/black with a thin tan head. Aroma has dark fruits, tabacco, and sweet espresso...some burnt toffee. Flavor follows suit...mild smoke and bitter chocolate creep in...great job of not getting to aggressive with any one flavor. Mouthfeel is medium with a smokey/burnt molasses/tobacco finish.
