Yeah it is a soft rating for me but at this point of completion of the MJ 500 book and my 366 rating I will take it.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
A fruit, roasted malts/meats, and brewed coffee nose. Pours a blackish brown with a large, mostly diminishing rocky dark tan head and nice lacing. Taste was medium bitter - a strong roasted/burnt quality with fruit and coffee notes. A pronounced bitter finish and aftertaste. Medium-full bodied with minium carbonation. Overall, would drink again. Catherine the Great obviously had good taste.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
9.3oz bottle, brewed May 2011. Poured medium-deep brown with a short, tight-bubbled darker beige head. The aroma picked up sweet, toasty coffee and chocolate malts with rich cocoa and vanilla warmth accenting.. some airy biscuit and bready accents.. warm and welcoming. The flavor found roasty, meaty coffee at the core, with cocoa and darker chocolate notes shooting outward.. vanilla showed at times, and complemented well.. finished roasty with rich malts, some earthy bitterness, and pleasing alcohol warmth. Heavier-bodied, and a little thicker than expected on the palate.. very well-balanced.. tasty and very enjoyable. This was an excellent, classic, English-inspired imperial stout.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aroma is delicious- vanilla, light caramel, mild cacao and dark berry and plummy fruit notes. Tastes great, but not quite as layered as the nose, mostly rich dark chocolate, like a 65% cacao that approaches espresso flavors without getting overly tannic or biting.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
275mL bottle, no date for $7.99 at Beverages 4 Less in Santee, probably eight months ago. Black body with a one finer tan head, fair retention. Aroma has lots of milk chocolate with plenty of figs, molasses, and raisin notes to make me think it’d be a good sipper/cigar/dessert beer. Tobacco and decaying leaves are in there. There’s also some fruity English yeast and roast, though the roast isn’t too high. Flavor continues to be rich and chocolatey and fruity, not much roast at all, and I like it. Alcohol is masked well considering it’s at 10%, bitterness at a 2, light roast. Full body with low smooth carbonation. Very tasty.

Very dark brown with medium-large beige head. Aroma roasted malt, nuts, wood, cocoa. Medium-full body. Just a little alcohol. Flavor coffee, hint of caramel, chocolate, dark fruit. Slightly sweet. Decent balance. All the elements are good, although didn’t really excite.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle May 2011. About as prototypical as you could hope -rich, oakey, heavy dark malts, alcohol well hidden. Long lingering, smokey finish. A bit hoppier than expected and a big espresso roast finish. Warming as it enters the esophagus. Just missing something to really elevate it above the pack, but when you are the innovator, I guess the rest are turning some interesting tricks to best the original. Perfect size for one person to enjoy too.
