Pours black with big brown head. Aroma of dark chocolate and licorice. Taste of licorice, roasted malt, dark chocolate. Oily thick consistence. A bit week in the finish but there is some warming alcohol.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Black pour slight tan head. Quite carbonated for an imperial stout. The aroma has some coffee and some chocolate malt but somewhat mild. Taste is full of that stale english malt. Slight coffee on the back. Touch of sweetness. Im really not big on the english malt this and traditional porters. Not bad. Just not very good either.

Single bottle at a local beer tasting. My enjoyment was not hindered by the fact that this was the 11th of 11. Jet black colour almost, long tasting tan coloured head. Superb beer - almost a liqueur type drink - and at 10% ABV - it ’s for sipping not guzzling.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
275ml bottle into a snifter. Bottled in May 2011.
Pours pitch black with a dark tan half finger head that is pretty fizzy and quick to fade. Head retention and lacing are both lacking with just a ring left around the top of the beer.
The aroma has much more of a fruity character than other RIS I have had. Lots of dark fruit and licorice that really reminds me of many English ales, just on a stronger level. Really not much roast at all just a lot of fruit and yeasty esters. It works, though, and nothing is offensive whatsoever.
The flavor is where this beer really shines. Much like the aroma, dark fruity esters dominate at first. Somewhat sweet with quite a bit of yeast character. Not extremely impressive but about halfway through the taste, something magical happens. Almost out of nowhere tons of roast comes shooting in along with some coffee and dark chocolate. This marries magically with the dark fruit leading to an intensely complex finish. Moderate bitterness with a lot less sweetness than many other RIS with a pretty dry finish.
Overall, probably the best RIS I have had. Extremely complex flavors and an absolutely amazing mouthfeel with alcohol being extremely well hidden. A definite world class beer.

I had the 2012 vintage in a 9.2 oz bottle. It pours out deep brown that turns to black when it hit the glass. Small tan head, yeast fruit aroma, creamy mouth, coffee and fruit flavors balanced with carbonation which makes a very nice finish. I like it.

Dark brown to black with a brown head.
Aroma: fruity and light vinous, earthy.
Taste: roasted, cocoa, coffee, vinous, fruity, licorice, light smoky, brown sugar, medium bitter.
Nice, but I am sure this will develop over the years with cellaring.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rating #1900. 275ml brown bottle. 2012 vintage. No 018620 of 210,000. Pours a typical deep brown to black shade with no light shining through. The head is medium brown, pretty foamy, airy and larged sized bubbles that throw up some sparse and patchy lacing. It thins down to a ring about five minutes after the pour and leaves a small swirl on the surface. Nose has chocolate and coffee and cherry like dark fruit. Taste has chocolate malts, medium roast coffee, dark fruitiness. Bitterness comes from the roasted malts, a bit mild but noticable. The body is about medium, a bit thinner than I was expecting but still ok. Carbonation retains a fine bead throughout the drink. Alcohol isn’t particularly strong, there is a bit of but there is some warming in the throat. The aftertaste is roasty with some coffee beans and chocolate and mild dark fruit. Drank at room temperature. Overall an enjoyable impy, decent depth of flavour, tastes very nice fresh.
