3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle @ home. This baby sounds super interesting historically, so I’m very excited to taste it. Cloudy, dark brown appearance with a big, foamy, dark brown head. Burnt woody, charred dark chocolate malty, lightly smoky, mild fruity aroma. Rich chocolate malty, dark roasty coffee, a touch smoky/charred woody flavor with some light fruit notes. Pretty nice brew.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours black with a large, lasting head.
Nose shows cocoa, dark chocolate, oatmeal and a fair bit of earthy hops. Pretty nice stuff, very interesting.
Flavours are incredibly rich. Chocolate truffles, espresso, sultanas, prunes and booze. A bit too full on.
Nice thick body, could use more carbonation though.
A nice array of flavours but too sweet and boozy for me.

Bottle 330ml from Purvis. Masterpiece, full marks for me. Aromas of chocolate, nuts, and vanilla, hints of liquorice. Taste is sweet and bitter, with very long length. Palate is creamy, and full bodied. Black, with a frothy head.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
275mL 2011 ed. Pours clear sepia with a towering, enormous, tan mocha head. Rocky with incredible retention. Massive lace. Nose is sweet pears, relatively estery for style, sweet chocolate, spicy chocolate, fudge. Relatively subtle but complex nose with spiced apple pie. Taste is bitter, earthy, a bit dirty for me. Iron laden soil takes forefront moving to thicker bitter chocolate. Finish is dry and loses metallic character. Warming and decanting the nose becomes richer dark chocolate and heavy mousse. Taste is fuller and thicker chocolate mousse. Really improves over time in the glass.

An outstanding European imperial stout. Pours a big head if one isn’t careful pouring it. The bottle I got was brewed in May 2011 and had significant sediment at the bottom of the small bottle. I hefty beer that I imagine could have sat in the celler for several years. I don’t think it needed cellering, but I’d doubt it wouldn’t have lost any flavor.
This is a creamy stout which trails of into a bold mocha coffee with hints of caramel. A very nice stout but I wouldn’t have minded a bit more hops. If you know someone who likes a bold stout which is fairly light on the hops this just might be their perfect beer. Alas us Americans have a inkling for more hops and a preference for tasting a little more of the booze. It is actually pretty phenomenal that a beer with 10% alcohol has such a small alcohol flavor.
This beer is worth a try for any stout lover. This is a great after dinner beer. Never drink this beer after drinking an American style imperial stout as the American beer’s hops will overwhelm the more subtleties of this bottle.

Bottle courtesy of Geist. Served in a SAVOR wine glass.
Pours a very dark brown with a good light tan head and a nice cap and collar. The nose carries a good dose of chocolate and mild roast. A bit of malt sweetness then comes through in the flavor. Very nice for an English version of an RIS. Good creaminess throughout the feel. Quite chewy. Moderate alcohol. Winner of a beer.
