Courtesy of northernbrews
Bottle: The aroma consists of dark chocolate, anise, some spice, pine, and roast. It pours a dark brown with some faint orange highlights and a large beige head with good retention and lots of webbing left behind on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts moderate-heavy molasses, some chocolate, and vanilla. The finish has notes of spice, roast, pine, and light coffee. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation and a soft mouthfeel.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
After 5.5 years had a fresh bottle(so cognac ageing of the 1978 I had in 2006 not there yet as only year old) courtesy of Gary. Very creamy, light chocolate and roast. Very good, and uncomparable to the US versions of this style. A Must try. Big head.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Heavy hitter. Poured at a good temperature with a super size tan, foamy, frothy, fluffy head that settle very slowly and some lace. Color is a very dark, almost opaque, but clear amber brown with lots of bubble trails. Aroma is malt, dark, ripe fruit, yeast, wine. Flavor’s like nose with subtle sweetness, soft carbonic tang, roast/yeast/hop bitter and a little clashing between some of those qualities. Body is soft and full; ditto carbonation. Finish is like flavor, long, and quite boozy. Big beer. Neat that Courage is able to come back with a beer like this.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Black body. Big, frothy, tan head, slowly diminishing. Fruity, caramel sweet aroma with notes of roasted malt, coffee, sweet licorice. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery texture turning sticky, lively carbonation. Tastes of classic ESB caramel along with, bitter roasted malts and coffee, licorice and some lighter sweet fruits, pear in particular. Alcohol in the finish to add some peppery notes to the lingering bitterness and a bit of sourness. The beer is rich with lots going on, but the flavors, the sweetness, sourness and bitterness are not complimenting each other.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
opaque black with a thick tan head. slightly creamy medium-full body with medium carbonation.
aroma: chocolate, licorice, black roasted barley or malt, and some silage. i do get the pear.
taste: foam is sweet and chocolaty, beer tastes much like it smells, but with a leafy and woodsy whole hop character. much more balanced than our american examples, and more sessional, but every bit as complex. with less hop bitterness and burnt astringency, the other flavors can all come through in a complex harmony.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Poured from a 9.3 oz. bottle into a 10 oz. nonic half pint glass.
Pours pitch black with a beige half finger head, considerable lacing present. Aromas of roasted malt with espresso undertones dominate accented with pleasant inviting booziness. Creamy, smooth, and full-bodied the flavors of roasted malt, espresso, dark fruit, all accented with notes of apricot, pear, and apple. Very complex and satisfying this brew justifies its historic status.
