Black body. Big, frothy, tan head, slowly diminishing. Fruity, caramel sweet aroma with notes of roasted malt, coffee, sweet licorice. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery texture turning sticky, lively carbonation. Tastes of classic ESB caramel along with, bitter roasted malts and coffee, licorice and some lighter sweet fruits, pear in particular. Alcohol in the finish to add some peppery notes to the lingering bitterness and a bit of sourness. The beer is rich with lots going on, but the flavors, the sweetness, sourness and bitterness are not complimenting each other.

opaque black with a thick tan head. slightly creamy medium-full body with medium carbonation.

aroma: chocolate, licorice, black roasted barley or malt, and some silage. i do get the pear.

taste: foam is sweet and chocolaty, beer tastes much like it smells, but with a leafy and woodsy whole hop character. much more balanced than our american examples, and more sessional, but every bit as complex. with less hop bitterness and burnt astringency, the other flavors can all come through in a complex harmony.

Poured from a 9.3 oz. bottle into a 10 oz. nonic half pint glass. Pours pitch black with a beige half finger head, considerable lacing present. Aromas of roasted malt with espresso undertones dominate accented with pleasant inviting booziness. Creamy, smooth, and full-bodied the flavors of roasted malt, espresso, dark fruit, all accented with notes of apricot, pear, and apple. Very complex and satisfying this brew justifies its historic status.

275 ml. bottle, brewed on May 2011- Pours almost black with a creamy one finger tan head. Aroma is very English, it has that Sam Smiths smell to it, sweet and earthy. The taste is the same, very English, chocolatey, coffee, earthy, very drinkable for 10%. Body is full, but have had fuller Impy Stouts, carbonation is medium. Overall have had better, but I really liked this, I think the year of age has really helped this, but I haven’t had a fresh one, so I couldn’t say for sure.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of chocolate, alcohol, and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, chocolate, and roasted malt, leading to a dry roasted and alcholic finish.
