Thanks to my buddy from MA for sharing this strange stout. The nose was full of leaves, raisins and coffee. For a stout the flavor was also a tad fruity, but a roasted backbone full of chocolate malts provided a satisfying balance. With a high abv this beer is fun to drink, and rather light for such a brew.

Pours jet black, with a full, toffee colored head. Ah, the nose. Dark roasted coffee with a roasted dark cocco waft that cannot hide the spruce/piney hops waiting in the background. Earth and figs are there too. Powerful malty sweetness wrestling with a steady hop presence. Motor oil thickness with a medium bitterness in the finish, but nor overpowering. In a word, majestic.

Bottle. Rating #67. Dense dark black pour with a real nice tan head that left some nice lacing on the glass. Dark fruity aroma, raisins, molasses and a bit of chocolate. Big flavor, roasty and bitter chocolate with some soy sauce, very rich and quite tasty. (2245)

Bottle thanks to owen. Pour is jet black with dense dark tan coloured head. Plenty of lacing as the head slowly disappears. Aromas of dark raosted malt. Hint of fruit and some acidity. Flavours are dominated by slightly harsh bitterness thanks to the grain. Slightly thin mouthfeel.

A friend picked a 9.3oz bottle of this up for me at Everett’s in South Beloit, IL in Early 2012 for $6. Pours a very dark brown/black color with a thick light brown head. Pours beautifully into a glass and expands like a mushroom cloud. Heavy scents of cocoa, caramel malts, and burnt sugars. Taste is bold and full of flavor. I think this is as about as close to a “perfect beer” as I have ever had. Great robust taste with complex ingredients that compliment each other perfectly. Smooth as silk texture with sweet after taste. A fantastic sipping beer!

Bottle. Moderate to heavy malt aromas of dark bread, toasted andstrong coffee, Moderate herbs and resin for the hops, light to moderate leather and earth for the yeast with wood, solvent and tobacco in the background. Head is huge, frothy, light brown with fair lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is muddy and chunky, veryt dark brown with swirls of lighter brown. Flavor starts lightly sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and long harshly bitterness like chewing tobacco. Palate is medium to full, creamy with a carbonation between soft and lively, and a finish that’s chalky, moderately alcholic, and very dry, with some bits to chew on. It has a great aroma, but this Imperial Stout is a little harsh in the mouth to justify the price to go back and get another one.

Bottle from Beer Revolution, Oakland. It pours very dark brown, with a thick beige head. The nose is roasted malt, smoke, espresso, leather, toffee and liquorice. The taste is caramel, toffee, roasted malt, coffee, smoke, toast, charcoal, meat, wood, some fruit, liquorice and alcohol warmth, with a long dry-roasted finish. Full body and moderate carbonation. Good balance. The best thing Wells & Young have done in a long time.

Bottle from Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark brown with a thick tan head and a chocolate aroma. There is a hearty smoked treacle and coffee flavor with adry finish. Very rich.

Has a dark, roasty nose but more malt than a typical stout. Taste is heavy and dark, but not the coffee grind bitter I normally expect and don’t like. Really a good stout and if I were a fan of this style it might get a high rating.

Sec, vineux presque sûr avec des notes de cafés et de chocolat. L’amertume complémente assez bien. Tout de même étrange stout.
