Mellow bitter aspects mixed with dark chocolate, raisin and a bit of lactose. Quite frothy with some smoke to it. I noticed a bit of grittiness in the mouthfeel, but quite enjoyable. In the finish there was a bit of anise.

Rating #2152 - 2015.11.05 - Sampled at Willow Park Beer Bash - Big bubbly black pour with a tan head that erupts from an aggressive pour. Aroma is heavy roast malt, caramel, mild vanilla. Taste is roast malt espressoey bitterness, medium-heavy alcohol character, but well tempered with the luxurious toffee sweetness. Impressive.

UPDATED: SEP 23, 2016 Bottle 275ml (2013) - cellared for 3 years. Served at cellar temperature. Pours extremely dark brown (virtually black). Head is small, tanned, and is mostly lasting. Aroma is rich and malty; toasted white bread, burnt chocolate, brownies, prunes, dried currants, burnt brown sugar, soft liquorice, treacle, and leather. Flavour is smooth and complex with a light-to-medium roasted/earthy hop bitterness; roasted barley, salted liquorice, dark raisin chocolate, prunes (light), strong black coffee, soil, charcoal/smoke and notes of burlap in the finish. Full bodied with very soft carbonation, an oily texture and an extremely long, warming, progressive finish. A VERY big, yet somehow refined Imperial Stout.

Bottle, 275ml. *** Colour: Pitch black, with a small, creamy beige head. *** Nose: Strong aroma of milk chocolate, licorice, some roasted malt, altogether sweetish. And alcohol!. *** Mouthfeel: Full-bodied, creamy, very soft carbonation. *** Taste: Intense licorice, dark chocolate, coffee, brandy at the outset. In the middle the sweetness evaporates, dark cocoa dominates the palate. Dark Chocolate and burnt malts in the finish, aftertaste is sweet again, of licorice and coffee malt. *** Impressions: Intense flavours in this imperial stout which alternates between sweet and bitter notes. A great desert, certainly, but the string sweetness may not be everybody’s cup of tea. But a very good strong stout nonetheless, though I would slightly prefer Samuel Smith’s Imperial Russian Stout.

Bottle shared by Johan Schultz thanks. Short light brown head. Clear dark brown color. Rubber aroma with some roasted malty aroma. Mild bitterness and chocolate taste. Balanced bitterness and well fermented beer to give a good imp stout.

A 0.275 l bottle. It poured almost black, red hued body with a small brown head. Strong aroma of licorice, roasted malts like coffee and cocoa with some sweeter fruity notes. Flavor was lightly sweet, also a bit bitter, all from roasted malts where the coffee dominated. Cocoa, brown sugar, some licorice made it up as well. Medium complexity, I thought it would be higher. Medium body with longer, sourish coffee finish. Okay, a correct and enjoyable imperial stout, although quite an average or sub-par one. Also overpriced.

Bottle from The Wine Emporium 101116. Little bottle that packs a big punch. Holds the alcohol really well and you wouldn’t know that that was a 10% ABV beer by just drinking it. Dark and deliscous with everything that is good about beer packaged into this one bottle.
