My Bottom Line:
This dessert of an Imperial Stout joins prunes, milk chocolate, roasted cereals and caramel, leading them to a heavy yet harmonious finish.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slim slice of foam garnishes the darkness.
-This lacks hop character in the finish (for my tastes in the style).
-Carbonation is rather low, which makes the sweetness feel heavier.
-The nose is very expressive and predicts the sweet onslaught.
-Unripe pears also appear in the flavor profile.

Opaque black with a creamy beige/ creme head. Aroma is molasses with some burnt caramel and mineral yeastiness. Flavor is burnt coffee, molasses, some prunes and dark chocolate aftertastem, really nice. Medium palate, really drinkable and complex. Not as good as the classic, but very solid nonetheless.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2014 I’ve been avoiding this beer for a couple of yours now. Not because I didn’t want to try it but I feared it would not live up to how it last tasted back 1994. But I just couldn’t contain myself. And it started well. The nose has that dank damp concrete quality typical of this beer when fresh and brewed at John Smith’s in Yorkshire. On the palate its a bit Sweeter and richer than it once was which os no bad thing and it coats the inside of your mouth with a light austere bitterness. Still as potent as ever too. Has lost some its complexity, dimension and individuality since last brewed in 1992 but it could have been far worse. Still, because this beer is built for long term aging, like a big tannic fine wine, it won’t really won’t show its hand for some time. But this is where it is at the moment. I expect big things down the line.

Bottle - opaque black with a fizzy dark brown head which lasts a good while. Aroma is loads of chocolate, light roasted malt and notes of vanilla. Taste is sweet malts, roasted and vanilla with loads of chocolate again. Light bitterness on the finish. Medium body, medium carbonation, incredibly well balanced.

[5946-20131019] Cask. Sour roasted malt grain aroma. Black body with a quick bubbly tan head. Boozy roasted grains and woody malt flavour. Full body. Good. (7/3/8/3/15) 3.6

275 ml bottle. Pours an orange tinted black with a resilient beige head. Aroma is sugar, fruits, pear, smoke. Flavor is chocolate, burnt caramel, pear. Finish is boozey, overripe fruits, smokey. Lingering fruit, smoke and tobacco. Medium to full body. Unctuous and oily mouthfeel, with a weak carbonation. An out-of-the-ordinary Imperial Stout, due to its high fruitiness. Interesting!

Espresso coffee and roasted nuts aroma. Dark black in colour with a dark yellow head. Extremely rich espresso, nuts and smokey flavour. Full bodied with some bitterness in the finish. Very good.

small frothy light browh head. fair lacing. mostly diminishing. flat thick black body. aroma: heavy toasted malt, dark chocolate, mild coffee, raisin, ruby port, alcohol. if: heavy sweet. ff: moderate sweet light bitter; long duration. palate: medium body, watery/oily texture, lively carbonation, metallic heavy alcoholic finish.

Draft at Uber. Nearly black pour with tan head. Chocolate, roast, salt, raisins, and beef jerky. Well balanced between sweetness and bitterness. Full body, average carbonation, slick smooth texture. Overall: quite nice.

Pours a very dark brown with a full head. Smoky flavor with strong coffee notes. Strong and flavorful.
