3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours black with a 1 finger, creamy tan head. Interesting aroma, oily roast, dark chocolate and coffee seem normal to the style, but there are big notes of berries and tree fruit that seem odd, but not necessarily out of place, some dark fruit, roasted nuts, lots of herbal hops and dried cattails. Flavor has lots of oily roast up front, overdone croissant, dark caramel, roasted nuts, sweet tree fruit, earthy, tobacco, campfire smoke, bittersweet chocolate chips, molasses and hints of licorice and warm pie spices. More dark fruit and spice come out as it warms. Heavy body with a creamy entry, oily middle, dry, somewhat astringent finish and light, sharp carbonation. Nice, no-razzamatazz Impy stout. It’s awesome, and very complex, without needing adjuncts or special aging vessels to achieve it.

Dark black body. Big aroma of toastyness and sweets. Taste is mostly molasses. A little too much for my liking. It’s ok.

Courage Russian Imperial Stout.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Opaque black with a creamy beige/ creme head. Aroma is molasses with some burnt caramel and mineral yeastiness. Flavor is burnt coffee, molasses, some prunes and dark chocolate aftertastem, really nice. Medium palate, really drinkable and complex. Not as good as the classic, but very solid nonetheless.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: DEC 22, 2014 I’ve been avoiding this beer for a couple of yours now. Not because I didn’t want to try it but I feared it would not live up to how it last tasted back 1994. But I just couldn’t contain myself.
And it started well. The nose has that dank damp concrete quality typical of this beer when fresh and brewed at John Smith’s in Yorkshire. On the palate its a bit Sweeter and richer than it once was which os no bad thing and it coats the inside of your mouth with a light austere bitterness. Still as potent as ever too.
Has lost some its complexity, dimension and individuality since last brewed in 1992 but it could have been far worse. Still, because this beer is built for long term aging, like a big tannic fine wine, it won’t really won’t show its hand for some time. But this is where it is at the moment. I expect big things down the line.

Bottle - opaque black with a fizzy dark brown head which lasts a good while. Aroma is loads of chocolate, light roasted malt and notes of vanilla. Taste is sweet malts, roasted and vanilla with loads of chocolate again. Light bitterness on the finish. Medium body, medium carbonation, incredibly well balanced.
