3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 20/20 Philip (436) - USA - JAN 16, 2006
1973 Vintage Courtesy of Rob (Rooftoprogue). An amazing acquisition sent across the Atlantic to Champaign-Urbana. Poured on the night of Brooklynboy’s surprise imperial stout tasting. Thanks Rob! Onto the beer: Still holding up after all these years. Sure there’s some oxidation and some funkiness, but there’s a solid imperial stout underneath at all, albeit one that resembles sherry more than an impy at this point in time. Lots of sour fruit notes, cherry and even banana on the nose and palate. Tastes like it spent some time in barrel, but I don’t see that on the description. Wonderful stuff, and would be fun to do it again. Gets a 20/20 on overall just for the experience.

rbesg07 grand tasting in glasgow, sampled both 1975 and 1977 botles. the ’75 was richly black with next to no head; rich tarry aroma; hints of choc chip ice cream flavour, surprisingly sweet withsome woody, port hints; luscious texture and very enjoyable. the ’77 had oxidised somewhat with the tar mixed with some sour mustiness, not in such good shape as the ’75

I think they’re remaking this one. Pours a dark rich bakers chocolate black with some light on the edges and two fingers of rich creamy tan head. Nose is interesting, lots more fruit skins and fruity esters than standard American versions and a lot less molasses and burnt character. Rich flavor with a good showing of chocolate and coffee with a mild fruity aspect. Full rich body and coating mouthfeel with a light carbonation and medium bitterness.
