3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Indra (2361) - Overland Park, USA - MAY 6, 2009
Draft at the Parkville Microfest 2009. Sweet, fruity aroma, some faint wood and whiskey, caramel and citrus, brown sugar and toffee. Mostly clear dark amber color, head is fine and slight. Flavor is hoppy, malty and sweet, the barrel aging apparent right away but certainly not overwhelming, with a good balance between the malt and hops, both strongly present throughout with more toffee, citrus and a fairly strong degree of bitterness. Finishes sweet, warming and spicy. Pretty good stuff. I had no idea what this actually was prior to entering this rating, only that it was barrel-aged -- I asked for a different beer at the fest and got this one poured for me instead, but I liked it so much I went back for a second sample!

On tap @ Court Avenue. Orangish amber appearance with a small head. Sweet red fruity pale malty nose with light oak. Sweet oaky, bourbon flavor that complements the barleywine flavor well though the barleywine flavor isn’t too strong.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Pawola22 (2203) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 12, 2010
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a lightly hazed, deep amber colored body with an inch thick, creamy, light tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is sweet and fruity with a solid caramel and toffee maltiness. Mostly cherry to the fruits. A mellow vanilla bourbon and light amount of citrus hopping. Flavor is similar. Vanilla bourbon and fruity malts with a mixture of caramel, toffee, and a hint of chocolate. Very lightly toasted as well as a lighter hop backing that gives off a slight citrus and a slight pine that grows a bit into the finish. Dry and sweet with lots of vanilla bourbon and caramel with a light hop that leaves a lengthy aftertaste. Medium, smooth body with a light, creamy carbonation. Very easy drinking and well balanced. Overall, a solid barleywine. A nice mix between sweet caramel, vanilla bourbon and light, but clearly present citrus pine hops. Very enjoyable.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 fidelis83 (1354) - Clinton, Iowa, USA - JUL 27, 2010
Growler thanks to Merkin666. Pours basically clear and somewhere between copper, ruby and brown with a 1-2 finger creamy off white head that has good retention and leaves a few specs of lacing. Aroma is big on vanilla, rye, buttery oak, spruce, grapefruit rind, dark caramel and a bit of toasted grain. Flavor is caramel, light or no toast, buttery oak, rye, lots of vanilla (I would definitely believe it if someone told me they put a vanilla bean or two in the barrel), light smoke, oddly bright pine notes, lightly bitter citrus peel and sweet cereal grain. Finishes with burnt sugar, a little extra toast from the oak and a little pine and a nice light mineral note to unburden the palate a bit, with a vanilla and caramel fade. Palate is medium bodied, a little syrupy on entry, lightly carbonated and increasingly dry to the long finish. Really good stuff.

Sampled at the 2009 Parkville microbrew festival. Pours dark brownish amber with a thick beige head. This is really awesome! Has a great malt aroma and an intense hoppy and malty body. This seems to me to be good like the way Rogue Dead Guy used to be. Wonderful.
