3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 durhambeer (2097) - Durham, USA - JUL 31, 2011
On tap at Oskar Blues in Longmont, CO. Pours a slightly dark golden, mostly clear and with a thin but present white head. Yeasty and citrusy, and surprising notes of banana. Thin palate. Not an over-hopped American saison, and not bad at all. Palate is a bit thin.

Hmmm....what to say about this? Good carbonation and pretty heavy lacing. Slightly cloudy golden light orange. Nose is funky, but not in a particularly good way and gets more so as it warms. More stinky than belgiany. Orange blossom..I know it’s honey but the orange is only maybe barely there. I know-I lived among orange groves for a number of years. Slightly lemony sour but all front palate with nothing to round it out. Mehh...save your $.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 drjay44 (1734) - Salida, Colorado, USA - NOV 20, 2011
750 ml. bottle. Pours an enormous, lasting white head, with some lacing over a very slightly hazy gold (SRM 5) body....nose is cereal, light apple, touch of pear, bit of allspice,....taste is cereal, light floral tones, hint of lemon, finishing with a bit of barnyard funk and light bitterness.....mouth feel light of medium, carbonation high. This is obviously a Saison. It is nicely balanced, and has enough aroma and flavor complexity to be above average. The funk was a pleasant surprise, and the spice of the rye is nicely present. 2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 Ernest (5184) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - OCT 15, 2011
Bottle.
Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting.
Body is hazy dark yellow to light amber, bottle conditioned.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (apricot), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of apple, fermented orange juice, pear syrup, gum.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, syrupy/watery texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
Alas, this seems to have a mild infection, as with a couple other Crabtree brews I’ve tried lately. The aroma is like orange juice that’s begun to turn along with some apple skins and chewing gum. Sourness in the mouth is puckery and again suggestive of bacteria. Quite sweet and syrupy with a somewhat heavy body and a fair bit of alcohol...all of that is the opposite of what saisons are about. And $13 for 25oz...why??? That’s like paying almost $6.50 for a 12oz bottle of beer, and it’s made 30 miles away from me. Saison Dupont is $9 for the same amount of vastly superior beer that actually *is* a saison and made across an ocean. That just doesn’t make any sense to me. Sigh.

Sampled at the Paramount Café Beer Festival, pre-GABF on September 28, 2011, Denver, CO. Hazy orange pour with a foamy off-white head. Aroma of tangerine, apricots, and light funk. Nice clean citrusy flavor with a light spiciness on the finish. Refreshing and surprisingly light at 8% ABV. Very good.

UPDATED: JAN 10, 2012 Bottle @ Beer Connoisseurs Tasting in Foco (and now a bottle @ home). Hazy yellow-orange appearance with a white head. Somewhat funky, orange citrusy, Belgian yeasty, mild barnyard, citrusy, a bit spicy nose. Nice funky, lemon/orange/pineapple, slightly funky, moderate honey, slightly tart, Belgian ale. Pretty cool beer, though I was a lot more impressed with it the first time around.

On tap at 2011 Garden Grapes and Hops at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Aroma of warm bread dough wafting from the great big head. Also, nice funky aromas mixed with toast. Silky smooth texture. Quite assertive medium body flavor. Some lemon citrus, toffee malt, ending with hay and barn funk. Really smooth and easy, yet flavorful.
