September 2008: A Greek Hefeweizen, it had to be tried. Found in a bar while on the lovely Isle of Crete. Poured into the breweries glassware it looked the part. A huge head sat on top of a moody looking cloudy, creamy orange body of beer. The aromas were citrus fruits, mostly lemon and grapefruits, I also found cloves in the mix. I like to pick up vanilla and banana esters in a Hefeweizen, but that’s just me! There were none in this beer (I had two, just to make sure). The taste followed the aromas almost to the letter although I thought some vanilla did come into the flavours I picked up. The depth of body just let this beer down a little. Refreshing it was, but I wanted more crispness and sharpness to it. A fine attempt at a Hefeweizen, but just failing to ’float my boat’ enough for me to endorse it fully.

bottle 330ml. For me the best beer of Craft microbrewery. Of course, it lacks many than beers of the same kind. Full bodied and refreshing weizenbier with a fruity and malty taste-aftertaste.

Thin head and a dark orange color. Yeasty-spicy aroma. Wheat and spice on the taste. Not bad. A decent weiss....

500 ml shared bottle, as Craft Weiss Beer, thanks to our beerpal Jan Magnus who brought it from Greece. ABV is 5.0%. Cloudy orange colour, moderate white head. Aroma with notes of malt and wort, overshadows the typical h.w. notes of cloves and banana. Also notes of over-ripe berries. Wheaty flavour, refreshing, with a more pronounced hoppy bitterness than in many other hefeweizens.

Keg at Craft Brewery, Athens. It pours hazy amber, with a thin white head. The nose is estery, custard, brown bread, pear and red apple. The taste is orange, yeast, light spice, brown bread, sweet pear, red apple and toasted malt. Medium body and fine carbonation.

50cl bottle from supermarket in Platanias, Crete. BBE 18092011. Poured hazy, orange color with a thin head. Yeasty, spicy aroma, not very typical for a german hefeweizen. Flavor is more in the style, wheat, yeast , spices. Drinkable. Bit flat.

The brewpub has been out lately, and we were lucky to find a bottle at random at Lesvos, an excellent Lesbian restaurant in Exharchia. The bottle was from December and it’s May now but seemed very fresh still. The color is lovely, almost a blood orange, certainly deep and dark orange and opaque. Unfortunately, the head is insubstantial. It’s fizzy and it fades, leaving a flat and lifeless looking beer with no lacing at all. Fruity and floral aroma is unique and inviting. The subtle floral notes add depth and prevent it from becoming too fruity, and yet the fruity esters are there in good proportion. No banana in the aroma, more like perfectly ripened plums and loquats. Peaches and other fruits mellow with the lightly toasted malts in both flavors and aromas. The esters and banana do come out more in the flavors, but they are balanced nicely by sturdy wheat malts and just a hint of floral hops in the finish. Quite nice.

Cloudy orange with a white head. Not very strong yeasty aroma with cereal and banana. Ok weiss flavour.
