3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 OldGrowth (2138) - North Carolina, USA - APR 27, 2012
Pint at the Surly Goat. Ok aroma, sweet. Citrus, grapefruit. Little stale smoke, toffee. Tad hazed brownish orange. Bittersweet flavor. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel, dry sweet finish, , meh, so so for a iipa, not grabbing me in either in aroma or flavor.. now wonder about retired status.

Bright orange color with an off white head. Aroma of floral, peach, mango, pine. This is starts off with grapefruit and pine, but finish is a dry almost flavorless bitter. Decent, but could use a bit more flavor.

If this was labeled as an IPA, I think it might have gotten a higher rating. I think it was a well balanced beer that poured a nice orange/burnt color. Aroma was strong but then the beer seemed to be a typical IPA. Not bad, mind you, I would order it again but just not what was expected.

A: The pour a pretty dark amber-orange color for a double IPA, this is something that usually worries me.
S: Not what I was looking for in this one. Lots of sweet, caramel maltiness. There’s a decent enough fruit character, but still quite a bit of brown sugar and malt character.
T: This is supposed to be an IPA/DIPA? Very sweet with plenty of caramel malts, brown sugar, and toffee. I don’t really get much, if any, hop bitterness or even any other hop traits such as citrus or floral notes.
M: The body is medium to full with a medium level of carbonation.
D: This was sort of like a middle of the road barleywine more than a Double IPA. Really malty and not much hop character to speak of.

Draft at the San Diego Strong Ale Fest 2010. Clear golden amber pour, off-white head. Floral hops, citrus, grapefruit, bitterness, and caramel malt. Pretty standard, but still nice.
